Help... Looking at buying a 1986 LJ70

Mine was repaired for rust on rear panels before I bought it.
It has 350.000km on dash now (if its real?) and everything runs relatively well on it.
I use it as a dd since I have no other car now.

coil springs seem to give a smoother ride. The most praised suspension upgrade seems to be dobinsons , second best OME.

As a dd, you must realize that car will never go too fast, or u risk killing the engine.
Having said that, I put 33000km in one year on it, but…..I cruise around 90km/h, rarely push it into 100km/h range.
That translates to 2200rpm-2600rpm. wheels 31".

If you go and look at the truck, try to look at the sills beind the doors, then try to inspect the rear panels. U can look at them by removing the side panels or use an endoscope.
On the right side, where the fuel pipe is, theres a shield to protect the pipe from the wheel spash. that area gets rusty under the shield
If you unscrew the carpet holder at the rear doors, you can inspect for rust on the inner rear arches.

Windshield frame is prone to rust too.

Again, as long as you think the engine is ok for you and you are lucky to see a well kept truck, go for it.
That engine can be swapped for 3l engine and v8 lexus ones easier than other engines.

I never seen that exhaust on any land cruiser I looked at in Europe, but hey…

If you buy it, then ih8mud is a fantastic source of advice and surely people are willing to help to fix the bugs.

from my experience with the 2lt engine, I would not even test the truck on a long drive without
checking
1-glowplugs
2-radiator cap
3-thermostat
4-fanclutch -that would include checking how much silicone oil is in it
5-radiator performance

I found issues with all these over a year and they are easy fix if you are aware.

best of luck!

What kind of sticker would he be removing ? It looks like a door vin tag... ?

Wow thanks for the info... I would have to drive it back 9 hours on the highway.... yes the mud people are great. I have done 7 Fj40's but would like to try something else... I will call to find a diesel shop to see if I can get them to look over it.

.. what coils would you recommed? Here are a few pics.

I would have a look at the Dobinsons Springs. They were the 1st company to make aftermarket coils for the LJ/RJ70 and they were a big improvement over the OEM suspension. They have just opened an office in Miami. If ARB sell them , they would most likely be good as well.

I don't know.. he just said that a hard top was able to be gotten? Did the 86 not come with one?

AFAIK it only came with a soft top or the permanent steel top. There use to be a company in Australia that made fibreglass tops for them ,but they were a bit crude. He might be confusing it with the mid wheel base that had the FRP top.

Does the seller have photos showing how this area was treated prior to the new paint job?

He did say it would be a fiberglass top. They where very common in France and in. Europe ?

not to sure about whats going on with that not so factory weld to the left of the 2l-t sticker? anyone?

Maybe he lost the brackets that holds the cable in position

Does he have a f/g top you can have or is he saying they are freely available? This is the one that was on my FJ73 ,the roof is 12 inches longer than yours. There is no equivalent for yours that I am aware of.

But that would mean it's not all original! That weld looks like junk..... to have such a nice looking rig it will be sad to see what else has been modified

Pics of it being patched up are a lot less telling than pics of it before it was patched up.

Well that crossed my mind as well. Lets hope he hasn't done any electrical work.

He said they where all over Europe.. the fiberglass tops.... but that's good to know... a removable hard top I think is a must.. but that means a longer version

I have seen the FRP chopped and rejoined to fit a swb but these things don't grow on trees. They are not something that comes off in 20 seconds. I think there is about 70 nuts and bolts involved and personally I think they do more good left on permanently.

Let's pray about that! He says it's all original.....

This was a pic he sent But I know its not the same lj70?
