Im no expert, but that engine seems second generation 2lt. to me, looks like the original motor was changed for that.
I think a french 1986 lj70 should have an engine just like my 1986 lj73… exhaust seems custom too...

but, I might be proven wrong….

ALEXY is right, I'm pretty sure that is not the original motor.

The LJ models are the light duty versions. That particular motor (2LT-II) can have overheating problems unless some key upgrades/modifications are done. So if you want a landcruiser 70 series that is good 'out of the box' maybe look at the heavy duty BJ7x or HZJ7x versions.

the vin tag on the fire wall has the 2-lt engine code on it... i thought the 2-l-te was the bad engine? when you say light duty.. because it has coil springs on all four sides... I guess i have not thought about that... not to good... How hard would it be to add the leaf springs?

Looks like a re-paint. I would stay away. I would stay away from anything from France, Netherlands, Belgium, maybe Denmark, Germany. I would consider anything from the southern countries, but also still would stay away from re-paints. If you really want leaf springs then go after something that has a BJ, HZJ, HJ. These are "heavy duty" and come with leaf springs. Check out the for sale section for mud members that sell 70's, you would have a better result with these, you may have to wait longer, but if you get in contact with these and let them know what you want then you can probably get first shot at these.
Don't buy a BJ from Spain or Portugal, these don't have a Toyota engine in them, and is not a good engine.

I have all the pics of the repaint... the seller has been very over the top upfront with me... what is the reason not to buy out of france? its just so clean and calling my name.. I truly want a 1982 bj42 but they are bringing crazy money....

and can someone tell me how to get the pics to go away when i post something?

I think those pictures must be linked in your 'signature'. Go into your user profile and erase the links to the pictures. Looks like you've linked to your photobucket....?

The coils in the light duty trucks are actually sort of nice IMHO. The 2LT-II shares the same cylinder head as the 2LTE. However, because it has a mechanical injection pump and less/no emissions stuff it is a better setup out of the box. Still a small displacement motor that works to hard and gets too hot in the OEM configuration though.

Everyone and their dog wants a BJ42. The prices are out of hand. Why don't you just put a 3B into a FJ40? It's not that hard. Then you get the diesel experience you want. Buy a rusty old BJ60 up here in Canada with a good 3B as a donor.

the 1982 fj40's are going crazy... just to much money for me right now... this lj70 looks to be super nice i am not going to take it off-roading. i have jeep wrangler tj for that! i would just update the lift springs and add a warn 8274 because i have one just sitting around the shop. I will be driving it as my DD around 60 miles a day. I am not a speeding kind of guy so i am ok with the smaller engine as lomf as i works... I will have the seller sell me a hard top at some point in time.. the coil springs i think will be a better on the road then the leaf springs. I wonder if the lj could have leaf springs added to it? thoghts?

These deals could be heaven or hell but are usually the latter.
The owner says he has owned it for 15 years, ask him for some pics of it before it was painted.
Do you really need a Warn 8274 on a DD? Must be a shocker of a road to work.

Why do you want to fit leaf springs? Most owners go the other way, trying to fit coils on their leaf sprung early model 7* series. You are better off upgrading the coils. The leaf sprung Landcruisers were mainly for carrying heavy loads. They make the short wheel base models fairly bouncy on bad roads.

thanks for the in put.. I can put a warn hs9500i on the front have one of them to... I just like having a warn on everything i own! the 8274 is a classic.. was holding into it for another fj40.... he has emailed me the before pics of the lj70 and as it was in the body shop... he has been the most up front person i have ever tried to do business with... i am so use to having me fj40 with leaf springs... i am just now a little bit scared of the diesel engine... people have such mixed reviews......

not to sure about whats going on with that not so factory weld to the left of the 2l-t sticker? anyone?

well, if it spent it's life in south of France, then you might be ok. As to the weld, looks like had to modify the throttle cable holder, or what ever that is, so maybe more proof that the engine is not the original, I just don't know when Toyota put the 2L-T in the 70 vs. the 2L-TE, or if the 2L-T ever was put in the LJ. What's he say about the engine? Maybe picture of data plate on firewall can tell someone who can decipher the data plate what engine was originally in it.

he said the engine is all original.... the exhaust is the short version.. the long exhaust come on the luxury version... ?

look to make sure the exhaust is fully supported, hard to tell from the pics. Also looks like the drivers door swing out catch/latch thing missing? Did he remove the front windshield to make sure no rust before painting? this is a common rust area. I guess if you like the pictures of before and during paint/repair then go for it? Don't know if Toyota sold a hard top for that model? So, what kind of hard top does he have for it?

I don't know.. he just said that a hard top was able to be gotten? Did the 86 not come with one?
