Help identifying transmission and transfer case

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1967 FJ40l for a project. this will be my first Toyota and there are a lot of questions about my truck. The person whom I got the truck from was gifted the FJ40 by the family of the previous owner who is deceased. So there are some mods to the truck that no one can be certain about. I'll attach some photos. It is in pretty good shape, it has a SBC, 262 I was told. It has two gas tanks, the frame is straight, some bondo on the body, has the tire carrier and ambulance doors. I know the transmission has some issues, just not sure which type it is. If you could please look at the photos and try to tell me what the transmission and transfer case are it would be a big help.

Looks like the Toyota three speed with two speed transfer case. Still three-on-the-tree or converted to floor shift? Original configuration is on the tree.
 
Thanks guys; it's on the floor with the two transfer case shifters as well.
Are rebuild kits for these available?

Also, are those front shackles stock? they look pretty big to me. There has been work done, but the only person who knows what for sure is no longer among the living. If I find a good deal I may junk the 262 as well, but for now it runs.

Any input is appreciated, well most input, laugh.
 
At least you don't have to worry about your bezel being upside down....

I actually do have the bezel in a pile of parts. I'm going to have to start from the frame up with this I think. I'll start reading some build threads to get some ideas.

Thanks for all the input. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along. I'll start taking pics once I start tearing it down.
 
Besides not being stock those shackles will cause steering problems if either wedges added to the springs or a cut and turn was done on the axle ends.

Two shifters for the transfer was was never OEM on any FJ40. Standard on a 67 was three on the tree for the transmission like has already been mentioned. Tranfer case would have had Vacuum shifter for 4WD and single shifter on the dash for high low range. The knob for the Vacuum shifter was by the high low shifter that had a pin attached to it that would put the vehicle into 4WD automaticly anytime the shifter was pulled. The floor shifter was a option at the time but a very rare option in the US market.

If you have a three speed transmission chances are it's the original Toyota three speed. Your transfer case is Toyota. It was also very easy to adapt the Toyota three speed to a GM V8. It just a spacer because the Toyota input shaft is longer than that a GM input shaft. You also pictured the TEQ cast into the case. There is a earlier three speed but almost all of those had two shafts coming out the side for the column shift to attach to. Plus these early cruisers were imported in low numbers, less than thousand as compared to the later three speed which tens of thousands were imported. The later three speed was the same from mid 63 until early into the 74 model year. Only difference was the top cover could for a column shift or floor shift. Most floor shift covers were set up for a reverse light switch. The column shift cover never was. But the reverse light started with the 68 model so a 67 model didn't have a reverse light.
 
That's some great information, thank you! I'll admit I'm behind the power curve with the FJs, but I'm doing what I can to catch up with my reading in my spare time. I'll tear it down to chassis soon and start taking pictures and coming up with a build plan.

One question I do have is, how do the stock size brakes handle larger tires? For safety sake, is an upgrade to disc, at least in the front a necessity?
