FJ40 details:
  • 1978 fj40 non-cali
  • previous owner looks to have tried to de-smog
  • has a 1983 fj40 Carburetor

See photo for question detail:
The wires come from drivers firewall and run along inner fender. I tried examining the wiring diagram but I think this might need forum support.

Wire 3 and 4 look to be using a single slot connector. That type connector is what the temp sensor
on the manifold uses.

Here's a pic of the green connector properly hooked......and for the win...even the dual brake sensors hooked.

The wire 1 comes from same loom as the starter wire.

1. Brake warning lamp switch to master
2. Connects to 2nd pressure switch on master (if using factory brake master with dual sensor ports)
3. Blue/Blue/Black goes to manifold temp sensor (under intake manifold)
4. This goes to carburetor flange temp sensor (not in use with your carburetor, leave unplugged)
5. If this goes to carburetor, check that it has 12v with the ignition switch ON and 12v disappears when key is OFF.

Also please note, wire modifications need to be verified by using a voltmeter and verifying continuity to their source, please do this. Do not guess, this is how folks burn up wiring harnesses and cars....by being careless.

These are a bit trickier to verify your colors. Synopsis: Black/white comes from ignition switch to starter for start signal. Another Black/White turns to black yellow at the coil to provide 12v to coil while cranking (only on non-gear reduction starters, this is eliminated on gear reduction, so do not use if you have Gear reduction).

1. Black/white turns to black yellow on the coil, please verify continuity to coil.
2. This should be your coil power wire, please verify continuity to coil.
3. This also goes to starter but you need to verify this wire comes from chassis harness (ignition switch)

This is a quick reference wiring diagram from Coolerman, please purchase/locate oem manuals as they are available quite easily for free or at a cost and learn to read flow diagrams and use a multimeter for testing.

Thank you , question why would previous owner connect 3 and 4 together with oem connector ?
