Hi Everyone, trying to get an 84 FJ-60 back on its feet. Everything is stock. Setting in storage for at least 5 years with 160K on it. Put on a new fuel pump and filter as it was not getting a good flow of fuel to the carb. It will crank with a shot of ether instantly and run for 30 seconds. I can get it to crank with the choke occasionally and it will run for a minute or two and then it just dies. Like the key was turned off. Wait 30 minutes and it does the same again. Sometimes it cranks without the choke and runs for a few minutes with the same result. This is my 3rd FJ-60 since 1983 and this one has me pulling my hair out. Should I:
1. Pull the carb and send it to Jim C?
2. Desmog now and put the Weber on like I did my 87 model? It runs great with 210K on it.
3. Take it to a real mechanic?
I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Was fuel stablilizer added before the shut down? I would think your whole fuel system is gummed up. Hopefully someone can offer some ideas on dealing with it.

if the gas is 5 yrs old too, then that would be problem #1. If so then you might as well drop the fuel tank and drain the gas. I would try that first of all and then fill with 5 gals or so of fresh gas.

1. yes, send it to jim c.
2. yes desmog, no weber... jim c is better. IMHP
3. maybe, especially for desmog if you don't know what to do. search on mud for threads on desmog.

very possible to happen, specially in cold climates.fuel stabilizers do there job.

i think my gas tank has a drain plug...

however. get all the old gas out and put some fresh in or take the fuel line and run it into a can of fresh gas. if that works you know what the problem is.

the fuel system probally has some junk and will take some time to work out. so i suggest drain it (and dispose of it properly) then put in some fresh super and some fuel system cleaner and see what happens like i say it will take some time to get all the crap out.

Did you put an electric or mechanical fuel pump on? If you did electric then check the the oil pressure shut off switch.

Thanks for the advice. I did add fresh gas with stablizer. I put it in everything around here as Montana gets a little cold. Got someone coming over tomorrow to check the float level. I can't see gas in the little window and he said I should be able to see it. I let you know how it goes.

Did you add the new fuel to the 5 year old fuel? Not good..Too late for stabilizer now unless your gonna park it again..won't hurt but won't do any good to just run it through...

there is a drain on my 84 tank, drop the rear tire and you'll see it.

Before you continue get a new fuel filter..It will be varnished up and even new fuel will have a very hard time getting through it.

take off the air breather..shoot the carb and every thing you can with Carb cleaner...Add some carb cleaning additive to the fresh fuel..

Then as said, when it gets running drive it..bring it home and get that oil out of it and a new oil filter on it.

good luck

Sounds familiar. :)

You need to drain out ALL of the old gas. You can "dispose of it" later by mixing 20:1 (new to old). One gallon for every 20 gallons news. I still have 10 gallons of old fuel to use us up (free to anyone wanting it an two gas cans... I just don't want to pour it into my new vehicles, and the Datsun will take a year to use that much gas).

If you added stabilizer to a full tank when you parked it, that would have been best. Still 'fresh' gas goes sour in three to six months, with stabilizer in one to two years. Either way you need to drain it all out... and add new gas.

When you got the new pump and filter one... steady stream at the carb?

Old fuel hoses will rot internally. Enough to really gum up needle and seat.

Card will need to be rebuilt (not that difficult, but if you don't have the time to tackle it... send it off to JimC).

I've gotten my fuel lines replaced/car rebuilt/new pump installed.... but can NOT blow air back through the line leading up to the filter. Plugged solid. Need to drop the tank and inspect this weekend (or when I get time)

You found your problem! Hope it cleans up easy enough.

BTW, I when I asked about old fuel before I got my 60 up and running, a friend of mine who turns wrenches for a living (hot-rods though, not cruisers) advised that old gas smells like turpentine. If it smells like gasoline, it's probably OK. My cruiser had sat for over a year but the gas smelled OK and it ran fine when I got it fired up again. Montana gets a lot colder than here so I would think water in the fuel is something else to watch out for.
