Curious what you all feel this truck may be worth?

Is this a $20k truck, $60k truck, etc.?

1982 US Spec FJ40
All Original (paint, etc.) - very minimal rust
Perfect working condition

That's an impressive rig. If it truly is a survivor FJ40, all original paint and everything, I would expect someone to pay around 40k. It can only be original once, and finding an unmolested, garaged, well kept FJ40 is a rare thing indeed.

Looks to good to be true for an east coast truck. How many miles? Does not look like the original floor mat up front. if it is all original and the engine can be smogged and has good compression, then i would suspect 35-45. What is the back story on it?

I'm not sure about those prices, but that is definitely a very impressive rig.

Very clean but looking at motor tells you it’s not a true low mileage survivor. Someone has already started with the extra wiring, zip ties, wrong clamps and so forth. Could be a survivor but someone has messed with it. The dash has a spare hole from what I can tell. Overall looks like a amazing 40 but I would be careful if it’s being passed off as a unmolested survivor.

I would say it could sell in the high 30’s to low 40’s if original paint , no rust low mileage. Now if that’s a redo I would say mid 20’s

I bought a 1982 FJ40 new off the lot and it came with white spoke wheels.
Grey wheels and hubcaps are hallmark of earlier 40’s.
The floor mat is a little off also.

needs power steering and a/c

Thank you all for your input.

To answer questions, it's a (3) owner truck. Seller says that all is original except the wheels (he thought the older wheels looked better and put them on), the catalytic converter and the stereo. Also, the truck didn't come with AC. I'll check on the power steering.

Only rust is on the back doors and very minimal surface rust underneath. It was an AZ and Texas truck it's entire life. Does any of this change your thoughts on pricing.

Brake vacuum booster and master cylinder do not look stock to me, having just replaced mine on my 1980.

But it does look like an exceptionally nice truck based on the photos provided. If an inspection proved it to be as nice as it appears, it would be a $25-30K truck to me - probably more to the right buyer or at an auction.

That is not surface on the ambulance doors. The rust is coming from inside the doors. Very strange the rear sill is not rusted. The cushion for the spare tire carrier looks like it's not square with the sill. Even in AZ rear sills will rust if they are not kept clean. I would verify not repairs have been done.

Verifying original paint would be my top priority in pricing the truck. Others have pointed out some little things that seem off from "original" but I feel like much of that could easily be put back. Original paint/body can never be put back.

Repainted or not, the truck looks very good to me. Keep in mind responses here tend to be what the individual forum member would pay, not necessarily what the market will bear. There are multiple 40's listed locally in that $35k-$40k range that are not even close to that one when you look past their shine at the details.

Others pointed out the front floor mat. The rubber is clearly cut pieces from somewhere else. My concern would be the carpet under that rubber that you see stretching over the tunnel with thick pad. The carpet that was in my truck was one of my biggest learning experiences/pain points when it comes to 40s. Never again.

Since we are "microscoping" this truck, I would point out the dent on the left ambulance door at the top of the bevel still has it's original paint unmolested. It's possible to dent a vehicle and have the paint not flake, but I'd inspect closer to make sure you can at least see a mark left by whatever made contact there. I know the barn doors I had and the tailgate I now have (thicker sheet metal on the older bodies from what I understand) would need a pretty hard hit to dent them like that. Could be that a body guy matched a little paint there, but then the whole "original paint" thing starts to get REAL dicey.

Let us know what happens.

I just looked up the NADA value, which is what my insurance uses to determine replacement value. I also believe NADA book values to be a reflection of the market and what people ARE paying, beyond mud members that have their wallets directly on the pulse of a good deal.

Interesting. Maybe this will inform your pricing. Keep in mind NADA values are averages. There are too many variables to hope for any exact comparisons. If NADA reports the data the way I think they are, Low Retail is not a rock bottom price, but sort-of like a 25% up from the bottom of the entire range mark. Likewise the High Retail is probably more like the $75%-ish mark on the scale, not the single highest price one has sold for.

For an '82 4x4 hardtop:
Original MSRP: $10,288
Low retail: $8,500
Average retail: $18,700
High retail: $39,100

I had booked my '74 in July when I put it back on the road and insured it, also to show my wife that the money I was putting into the truck would have value if we ever (heaven forbid) are forced to sell. When I saw the '82 values I was worried the market had taken a dip in the last 2 months, so I just looked it up again with these results:

For a '74 4x4 hardtop:
Original MSRP: $4,309
Low retail: $12,200 (+$250 since July 9, when I insured my truck)
Average retail: $26,700 (+$500 since July 9)
High retail: $65,600 (+$1,900 since July 9)

I'm not sure what to do with this data, but I am just surprised and thought I'd share.

Maybe the later models thinner sheet metal rusts out so much easier that they tend to be in worse condition? Maybe nobody sells their later models except people that don't know what they are worth so it reflects in the price? If either of those were true, I would still expect the high retail value of an '82 to be above that of my '74, based on my previous assumptions. TBH, I'm not even sure where those assumptions came from.

I'm rambling here. Sorry. Just processing this new information.
