i think i can find hot pink in a rattle can, how do you feel about racing stripes on a green truck?

You may want to check out Search Tempest - The EASY way to search Craigslist! it makes searching Craigslist way faster and can tell it what not to bring up which is nice. Something to consider is dark vehicles fade get hot here, and show pin-stripping very easily, but that doesn't stop me from wanting a maroon one. Good call on the Durabak. Whole truck or just fenders? I also think the white looks good with Durabak.

Why didn't you have lockers on your list? Do you have ARBs now?

I'm pretty sure I can speak to this logic:

A locked 80 is hard enough to find, let alone a very well maintained 80. If the cost of the lockers adds about $1500 to the price of the truck, then ARBs are a wash in terms of price. Therefor, one can easily purchase a clean, well maintained vehicle and not worry about lockers, if one doesn't mind installing ARBs.

I think that's how Ali explained it to me, and it more than makes sense to me. Besides, I don't like the fact that the e-locker has exposed actuators that need protection. The only thing that sticks out of the carrier housing with an ARB is a 1/4" NPT fitting and a little blue air line. Other than that, it looks just like the differential third member always did.

Dan

Yup, well put Dan. I'm also very partial to ARB air lockers.

When I bought our 80 it was about the 10th one I saw and I went to Austin to get it. One magic rule is the further south you go the less rust there is on the machine - of course that's just a generalization. In my experience the stock lockers typically add $250 to the price, depending on whether it was a mall cruiser or what. It was also the dark green color, which actually reduced the value ot the truck by about 50 cents. Of course I'm not all wacked out on matching curtains either...

OTOH when we got our 40 it was the first one we drove after deciding to pull the trigger - It's mechanically good, although we had to spend some good money on a solid epoxy paint job to hold the bondo together...

hey thanks mojo, i discovered searchtempest a few weeks ago, but not after doing it the hard way for months...:rolleyes:

nice taste, i like the maroon too, and that rig looks pretty burly. white is my version of beowulf green :flipoff2: if i had to pick my least favorite color, but no stock colors rub me wrong honestly.

as for durabak, i'm leaning strongly towards the whole body instead of paint. the hood and roof are pretty bad (down to faded primer) on the one i'm after so just doing the lowers would still require paint. it will be trail rig and i like the idea of never waxing or caring about brush rocks etc and not having the negative effects associated with paint neglect. and i like something different too. i like the chip sample of the durabak "sand" color, always loved that color in a 60 and the chip is close to what i remember. only problem i haven't decided if i care about is the fact that door jams interior window frames etc would still be green. thought about getting a little black and doing those in black for something different. also haven't' decided about how i would feel with sand exterior and grey interior of the truck. i read a post of someone saying their 40th was sandish outside and grey inside, factory, shrug. i got a chip of their forest green and think i could mix in some black to darken it to almost beowulf's favorite color, and then it would match untouched doorjams etc for a little more rugged stealth route. for exterior color sand is absolutely my favorite just wouldn't want to go through interior recolor if grey was bad news with it (yes i said cosmetics mean nothing but even i have my limits of what i could take :)) hey! nothing some hot pink or blaze orange couldn't take your mind off of.

About 13% of vehicles imported into the US between 1993-1997 had front and rear lockers.

You cannot always go by the little code on the door jamb sticker.

gotcha, internal database updated. thanks Onur.

sand, beige, desert tan: don't matter whatcha call it, it's the right color.

leaving the green door interiors will give it the 'camo sage' appearance.

who am I kidding: I like tan cuz it's cooler in the summer & it matches my dober's accents :grinpimp:

If you are going to go through the trouble of the entire car and getting the second color may I recommend this scheme in all durabak. Tan for the most part and on the lowers black, which you could use on the door frames as well. This is one is in my top 3 and have only see it done once. Here is also just a picture of a tan one.

you know what i had considered trying a two tone complete durabak... i couldn't come up with way in my mind of how to get the break line smooth. you can tape the paint and get a good line, but then i'm not sure how well i could tape the second color to the first and not have the durabak come under it given the major texture. worth experimenting with off the truck first, there has to be a way... taping to thin weatherstripping at the edge or something, shrug. the two tone design in general is fuzzier in my head. i'd have to look at the truck in person to dream up where i'd really want to put the break line, but it would be fun and it would def be unique when it was finished. i also kinda like the sand with a white top... maybe 3 tone, but part of me thinks that is a little ridiculous, so maybe i like it more

Thanks for indulging my tan fetish: dunno if a white top makes much sense under a loaded roof-rack.

Willing to let my non-racked rig serve as a test platform though!

And Mojo: that first shot makes me pucker!!!! Details?

heh, i guess white down to the gutters would always be visible... which is still the top IMO, shrug. i've seen some white top tan paint jobs on 'MUD. i can't remember if they added rack or not. suppose you could paint the rack mounts and rack white if you were really after the extreme concept of it

yeah mojo, where'd you pull those pics. were you there? hijack "thread" please

btw found the grey interior dune exterior factory link HERE but no pic :frown:.

so i'll ask a naive question, what made all you guys wait so long to pull the trigger on the starter vehicle (if you did)?

Just a bit more to add:

It is not a naive question. My story goes to where I pulled the trigger too early. I thought I was buying a '71 FJ40 for a good deal. I ended up having electrical issues. After that I went on fixing more and more. Everytime I took something apart, I decided, since I am here I might as well fix that. Well, serveral grand later I got feed up with her and sold it for less than what I paid plus everything I bought for her. Now, my 80, is a different story. I did pay more that what I wanted, but with only 96K miles, no rust, locked F and R blah blah blah, I pulled the trigger early. I am happy with this one. I am sure most here will be happy to help you out if needed, just ask.

Sadly I wasn't there. I pulled the pictures from MUD for my collection of 80 pictures on my computer. I think it might of been under https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/57788-wild-wheeling-pics.html and the all tan one was found here https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/218093-80-series-registry.html . Hope that helps.

Congratulations John! How about some more details - what year, locked or not, what color, how many miles, stock or modded, etc.

And once you have seen it in person, remember...

This thread is worthless without pics!

copy that, can't have a worthless thread :p

it is a '93, factory locked, ~184k mi, special edition Beowulf green (faded badly so he'll like it more), the front seat leather has seen better days, it has a ARB deluxe front bumper with no winch installed, solid maintenance history, after market stereo, otherwise stock rig, and best of all fits my price range.

begging for OME, 285 Duratracks, sliders, yada yada, and a partridge in a pear tree...

i attached a few pics the soon to be PO sent me from his garage.

Sorry to keep ribbing you Beowulf, i just can't resist, gotta get in my licks before you meet me and it's too easy to give it all back ;)

Nothing a rattle can of flat black can't fix. :D

Very good - thanks for the pics. That looks like a nice rig. Regardless of what Beowulf says, I for one am partial to factory-locked, 6M1 dark green, 1993 80's. They can't be beat. Just ask Cruiser Dan!

Probably your first project will be to remove the running boards before you lose them on the trail. Having said that, I am looking forward to seeing you and your rig on the trail!

Congrats again - let the mods begin! :bounce:
