This was yesterdays project. I finally got to the point where I could do the actual swap old for new. The old engine had a bad wrist pin after a valve job and HG tightened up the top end. I acquired a new (0 mile) engine complete with blower (prior to buying the 94 Green 80). Time passed, backyard landscaping projects to keep the :princess: happy took priority.

So, Saturday was the day and I was watching the weather and looked like I'd have most of the day w/o rain. Well, it came in a little earlier than I thought, about 1:30 it started sprinkling but we kept up with it because the engine wasn't even out at that point.

With the help of my son and his buddy, we pulled the old, swapped over some parts from to the new, stuffed it in and the patient is currently resting comfortably til I can get back to button it up. I figure the better part of two more days and it'll be good as new.

In retrospect, if I had to do it again, and I had a better hoist (not a rental), I would probably have pulled the engine/trans as one. Likely easier in the long run but very difficult in my circumstances.

Any pointers, advice when I go through the rest of this would be welcome. Also, if anyones in the neighborhood and wants to drop by next Saturday, I'll be out there again!

I've already replaced the PHH. They should all be that easy :D , I'm putting in as many new parts as are needed at this stage to make sure it's done right.

Here's some pics. I'll post more if anything interesting pops up.

First one, the weather is great, second one, not so much.

A new, 0 mile engine w/ a supercharger!?! That must have put a serious dent in the ole' billfold.

WOW, heart transplant in the drive way. You are Da Man....
Congrats on the new heart!

I've done several in the driveway but this was definitely the toughest! I can't believe how hefty that engine is.

I'll have to fill you in on that story some day.

Check this out. I disassembled the front thinking I'd need all the height I could get in a truck with 6" lift. The only thing I didn't completely remove was the AC condensor. Just really loose. Anyway, check the radiator and all the fuzz on it.

You can't see this just by looking at it, only when I had it all exposed could I see this. Looks like it blocks a lot of the radiator, undoubtedly blocking airflow, probably running warmer than normal.

That’s awesome; it sure feels good to make some progress on an old project. Seems like the hardest part of the job is just getting the first bolt turned after that it’s easy. Hope to see her up and running and on the trail soon.

Man, you got that right. This has been sitting for too long. I finally dove into it last Saturday, did a little of the front disassembly and that just motivated me to get it moving along.

Now that the engine is in, I can work on it when I can rather than thinking about the whole big thing. It's like they say, to eat an elephant, start with one spoonful at a time, and this has been the proverbial elephant.

I was hoping to make Rubithon this year, but it just so happens that my sons high school graduation is that Thursday. Ah, well some other runs will come up, I'm sure.

Thanks for the kind words. Dan.

Very cool. How many hours do you have into it (The swap)? I also dig the welded up flare holes.

Strong work. That kind of project does feel great to get done. Congrats on the score of an engine. Too late but when I did the HG on mine I let all the air out of the front tires. Helped out immensely getting into the engine bay, or getting an engine out.

About 3 hours one Saturday, and then about 7 the next. Son and buddy put in about 5 hours each on the 2nd Saturday. Goes much easier with 2 or 3, even if they're not even :banana: guys. It's so great having my son enjoy doing stuff like this with me. He wants to come along on the run on the 22nd if he doesn't work.

your neighbors must love you Dan, if I did an engine swap in my driveway I'd be getting dirty looks for along time.

That's something I take for granted with the guy on that side. He is very easy-going and completely not mechanically inclined. He just looks at me with grease up to my elbows and shakes his head. I think he's a little jealous 'cause I get my sons involved and he thinks that's pretty cool.

Other than that, I try to keep things pretty low-key, don't want to push a good thing too far.

And to further my good-neighbor policy, their Suburban had a low tire for several days before they got it fixed and I was right there with my tire chuck to get them going. A little grease for the skids, so-to-speak.

Good job man.

Hey man, good to hear from you! Is that your new ride over here? Looks nice, any mods yet? Hows the space up there?

I can't believe it's taken me this long to get it going but I'm stoked now that it's almost there. I was hoping to take it to Rubithon this year, but my sons high school graduation is on that Thursday so no luck.
Thanks for checking in.

Yep. That's the new rig. 85 Hi-Lux SR5. Got a 4" Marlin Kit waiting for install on the garage floor. Will be Rubicon ready shortly.
