Header or Stock Manifold?

just don't hit the back of your alternator and short out your electrical system (disconnect your battery).

I learned that one the hard way on another project I was working on. Now I know about the fusable link (it took 2 days to find out about it though)!

Doing some work on the drivers side engine compartment.......

Took out my trusty screw driver and sraped some dirt dopper nests off the exhaust manifold..........

Is that a crack? Screwdriver hangs on it....Get out wrench.

By the time said exhaust manifold comes off...... it's in 2 pieces.:doh:

Enter Problem #2

So now I've got a 2 piece exhaust manifold which is not factory and an intake manifold that has some bolt holes stripped out.... probably beyond repair.

First of all your exhaust manifold is a three peice manifold to start with. The end cylinder are sleaved on and are kinda loose. This allows for expansion of the cast iron when the three foot long manifold heats up.

Are you feeling or seeing one of the end peices or is it really a crack in the main body of the manifold.

Post pics if you can.

If a Heli-Coil does not work for the stripped hole you can use a Keen-Sert.

Dan, you are thinking later model 2F; his is a 69. We talked yesterday [I'm rebuilding his carb]; he now has a plan.;)

I just did the same thing while putting headers from SOR on my 74 w/ F engine...

it looks like i fried the connector and wiring for the alternator, can i get replacement wiring from an autozone or NAPA type place? How do i know if the alternator is still good?

also, i have a new gasket for the header, do i need to use a sealer of some sort when installing the header? or do i just bolt the new header on w/the gasket in place.. It looks like the p.o. had already switched over to a header cause that's what i removed, unless f-engines came like that..

Now that I've read more opinions, I havent read anything to change my mind. In my mind, the Header improvement in throttle response and mpg has just been too significant. That, combined with the fact that I have never been lucky enough to find a used exhaust manifold that didn't crack as it was coming off the old engine, or cracked as it was going on the new engine. For those who have found success with a used manifold---good for you.

Regarding the response "He just wants to sell you something", I own a Landcruiser accessory business so I guess there's not much I can do about that precieved image---yes I want to sell you something rather than go bankrupt!!!!!!!!!

And if you buy headers get the sphincter 2 piece set up.
Everything I've ever bought from Downey has been a PITA.

that's a pretty harsh blanket statement, I have purchased several things from downey and they have always been professional and very helpful.

oh yeah and FWIW I would throw a header on there. I have found that even the cheap headers you can get to seal just fine for many years if you put them on correct. I had one on my old F for 5+ years with no leaks. On the other hand, if you have a stock, non cracked one, save some $$ and run it.
