I'm thinking about either ordering a new short block form Dan(~$3100) and having my head rebuilt, or just having the whole engine rebuilt (I'm at +250,000mi).

Does anyone have any idea the actual costs involved. I can pull the engine myself, but don't have time to mess around with re-building.

I know I should just call powderpig, but I would like to have as much info as possible before wasting anyone's time.

Also, does anyone know any shops in the San Jose, CA area???

Head rebuild with hot tanking, milling the deck a wee bit, touching up the valve faces and seats, $325.
I supplied the OEM toyota valve stem seals, no other materials needed nor replacement valves, guides, followers. (this head had 228k miles on it and engine was ran low on oil at a time long ago)

Thank you.

I'm having my head rebuilt and hg replaced by superior automotive in anaheim ca. They are a top notch performance shop and I know the owner so that helps too. to pull the head and do all the work (they do a thorough rebuild, you can call and speak to Joe about what they'll do) and then reinstall it on my vehicle is around 1k (which is literally half of what I've been quoted by lc shops) and if I pull the head myself they'll charge around 400.00 to rebuild and then I'll reinstall it. I'm also having all the metal/alloy parts cryo treated for strength/wear life/ and cooler running temps by cryoscience in oceanside/fallbrook ca.

I called a salvage yard in san diego and the price for the entire long block with 141,600 miles on it is $1200.00. so you could go that route too...although you'd still want to do the hg soon on that eng.

Unfortunately, Nearly twice that here in high priced Santa Clara Valley.

I used A&M motor supply in Los Gatos. There are other shops in the area which might be cheaper, but I chose to support my local shop which has been good to me over the years. "Red" is the machinist there and he knows his stuff.

So it looks like I can buy the long block for about $3100, have my head rebuilt for ~$400, and slap it all together and re-install. Am I missing something major? This seems like a good deal.

Shipwreck, Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into them.

I'm in the middle of I rebuild so I'll chime in....

I'd budget $700 for the head rebuild which allows for 'stuff happens' and replacing a few key components.

Also, why a long block from CDan ? Get a rebuildable engine/core for waaaay less and rebuild that.

I have a spread-sheet showing everything involved in a rebuild of a long block and it's less than $3100.

PM me if interested. I'm in Walnut Creek.

There is a shop in Cupertino, near De Anza College, that rebuild 5 or 6 heads the last time Robbie/PowderPig was here. They know their stuff and are 'Robbie Certified'.

Don't remember the name but I can dig it up if you need ?

Wow. I will be sending you a PM shortly. If it's Robbie/PowderPig approved, then it's good enough for me.

My initial impression was that by the time I had my engine re-built to almost new condition I would be into it almost $3100.

If I can do it for less that would be great.

is that $3100 for a long block or a short block from Toyota? And to help me in my ignorance what is going to be included (eg new timing chain?)

$3100 for a short block. A long block is not available from Toyota. You would have to piece one together.

The short block is the block, the pistons/conrods/rings/main bearings/crankshaft.

That's it.

Everything else would either have to be bought or transferred from a donor engine.

I've been looking for this. Lots of good info.

Good info fellas. I love this place!

I wonder if the Venezuelans still have access to longblocks since they got these trucks up until 2007, anybody know? I will get in touch with my venezuelan friends and see what they say.
