Too far north. Too far east.
Anybody familiar with these? My head has already been milled for compression and needed the good gas at sea level. I suspect it will be milled again at Budlong. The Felpro Headsaver shim is .020".

I would see how much Todd has to take off to get it level. While you have the head off and with Todd have him polish the combustion chambers. This will get help with any high compression knock issues. A good head can handle 9:5:1 on 87 Octane.

Head is already ported and polished. I really need it to run correctly at sea level, or on Mexican gas.

What I really need is a 3RZ to show up at the U-Pull. The cylinders were almost polished with no cross hatch.

3RZE has 9.5:1 compression, and the 1GR-FE in my Taco has 10:1. Higher compression will give you better fuel economy and more power, both these newer engines run on 87 octane no problem. The 1GR-FE uses a knock sensor and retards the ignition timing if I use cheap gas, but uses more aggressive ignition timing for the 91 octane. It will get a few extra MPG with 91, and noticeable power gains. I would not use a head shim to lower compression, if you are having issues at sea level/low octane gas only loosen the distributor and take a few degrees of timing out. I have a timing light you are welcome to borrow. A better solution would be to get a programable ignition control module or ECU and knock sensor, but if your end game is a 3RZE maybe just retard the timing via the distributor or carry around some octane booster.

The other factor is that if this is your DOA built 22RE, and you are using a stock ECU you are probably running very lean. A lean engine will have hot combustion and contribute to knock, you will also not be realizing some of the power the engine is capable. A wide band lamba sensor and programable ECU is a must for a highly modified engine. Fortunately there is a plug-n-play Megasquirt for the 22RE (same unit I have been considering for 4AGE), there are databases of maps you can upload, you simply remove your connector from OEM ECU and connect MS. http://www.megasquirtpnp.com/ You can get it fir half the price if you don't mind soldering it together.

Can you use the head gasket from MLS head gasket company to account for the additional decking done by Todd? I think you can order as many layers as you need your HG to be from MLS.

The problem with a thicker head gasket is it will ruin your squish clearance

I talked with Todd about the shim. He actually suggested it, but he is going to measure the head to see how much has been milled off already. They are working on the head now.

Numbers from Todd. He measured the deck height.

Factory new: 3.790"
Minimum spec: 3.780"
Now: 3.770"
After milling: 3.765"

So, my head is already milled .010" below spec. Headsaver will add .020" so I will be half way between new and minimum.

Todd also said the valves had been ground 'razor sharp' and need to be replaced.

Cost? $267.

It sounds like the Headsaver should get you right back to where you need to be. It sure beats replacing the head. Budlong & Todd have been good resources for the club.

Who ground the valves last time?

Head is on and I only made one mistake that I had to sleep on. Dizzy off one tooth. Now to warm it up and adjust the valves.

Note to self. After making a mess under the hood it's a good idea to get all the spilled oil washed off. It's an even better idea not to get the TPS wet in the process. Engine gets cranky when that happens. Glad I had the CO2 bottle onboard to blow it out.

How's it running?

I drove it up to Bernalillo yesterday and it ran great on the freeway. I just don't like how it idles and the valve-train is very noisy. I've checked the valve adjustment twice.
