I picked up a 1984 2F motor. The seller was driving it around but claimed it had a blown head gasket and let me have it for $100. I'm just now starting to tear into it, and wanted to post some pics.

Since I've never torn into a 2F, and never installed a new head gasket, I'm not sure how to confirm the head gasket diagnosis. It does appear that some of the coolant channels were occluded by the existing gasket, making me think it was either the wrong gasket or incorrectly installed.

See anything obvious that agrees with the previous owner's theory?

Those two 'steam cleaned' piston heads and the 'stretched' head gaskets between them as well as the distortion in several areas tells me you have had a head gasket failure... Pretty apparent.

Agreed, thanks!

Before reassembling take a straight edge accross block and head surfaces to make sure they are flat and not warped. You can use a light or feeler guage to see if flat. If warped you will need to file flat or have a machine shop mill flat.

Thanks @Jeepster09 . I had the head magnafluxed and discovered a crack. Not worth me rebuilding at this time, opted to start parting it out!
