I am looking at swapping my rear discs (I've already done the front) to the larger North American 80's rotors. I believe its the 1993-97 I am after. Mostly swapping the rears for parts availability as I dont think their is much of a performance gain to be had. From what I can find on the forum I only need to replace the Backing Plate, Rotors and E-Brake shoes. Sounds like the calipers are interchangeable.

Can Someone who has done this swap please confirm this and supply any OEM part numbers they used? I am having a hard time finding part numbers for the backing plate and E-Brake shoes? Also brake line numbers if someone has them please?

It would be easier to keep the rears you have and source the parts off the net.

My backing plates are rusted badly and need replaced anyway. Sourcing parts for the North American gasser is going to be cheaper and easier in the long run

^^^^ yes it will, fj80 brakes are less than half the price of the hdj80. Sorry I can't help you with part numbers but I will ask my brother because I think he just did this.

Do it if you have rusty backing plates, but not because it will be easier to get parts. I put new rear rotors on my truck, had them in less than a week. At the current rate I won't have to cross that hurdle again for 25yrs.

In Winnipeg here with all the salt they spread on the road in winter,i just check my rear rotors I replaced 2 years ago and they are rusted to hell.....

Backing plate #'s for the rear:

RH: 47043-60110
LH: 47044-60060

Is that right?

Seems odd that a number isn't listed for the HDJ81. Here is a picture of my rears from the last time I did the rear brakes and clearly there is a backing plate there. My truck is a 1994.

Did this a 5 years ago. Everything is a direct swap - went '94 onwards, but can't remember why not '93. I bought the backing plates from the MUD classifieds. All E-brake hardware is the same. Hope that helps.

That's for the fronts, so not what is being discussed. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade though.

Ah yes, I quickly posted that link forgetting that it only covers the front.

The correct part numbers for the rear backing plates are:

46503-60081 RH
46504-60041 LH

They are available from Toyota, but over $400 each wholesale. Used ones are the best bet.

The part numbers for the rear caliper brackets for an FZJ80 are different than for an HDJ81. But they are the same.

All the rear brake part numbers for a 1997 FZJ80 here:

Thanks Steve, those part numbers for the backing plates check out. But crazy expensive to buy new like you said. I seem to remember seeing on Facebook that you had done this upgrade. Do you know the actual size difference in the rotors? Was their any noticeable braking improvement?

It's like 1/4" overall, I don't know that it's a huge performance increase. I did the fronts/backs together and overall the difference was huge but I don't know much the larger rears contribute to that. It was ok for me, I had a '97 FZJ80 parts truck to take the backing plates from. I've since seen them in the classifieds and you could try a "wanted" ad. But yeah, $800+ for the pair makes it definitely not worth doing.

So my rear brakes just puked everywhere. I was at a brakes shop hoping it was just a brake line leak, turns out it's full CPR.
Up here in N.Alberta it's hard to get parts on short notice. And the shop couldn't find anything cross referenced from NA gassers, even the late model. I tried for 97 LX 450 and we hit some listings. A friend of mine used the late model LX for his brakes, but it wasn't until after I'd ordered that I found out he had only done his fronts.

Can you confirm that 97 LX 450 are the same as the 97 FZJ80 and are completely compatible as rear break upgrade for a 91 HDJ81?
I didn't order any backing plates, I was later told that my current ones could be dremeled to fit in a pinch.

What puked? I understand that the calipers are identical between FZJ80, LX450, and HDJ81. The difference is in the rotor diameter.

Pads and rotors wore down so much, that the caliper piston popped out.

I'm doing anal-retentive brake inspections from now on. But also upgrading rear now, and front soon, so that maybe there will be less wear on my brakes as well.

Hey Dana, sorry to hear that, those must have been some VERY tired brakes! I just had a front caliper totally seize on the front of my 96'. Caliper rebuild kits are available from Toyota for both the front and rear calipers. They are cheap ($40 for the front and I think about $35 for the rear) and it's easy to do.

I upgraded the front brakes while I was in there and did a full front axle rebuild too, what a difference! EBC rotors and pads now

I am just in the process of assembling mine today. I ordered everything OEM and aftermarket for a 1995 FZJ80. Turns out the backing plates are still available some places in NA for $160CAD The overseas sources I checked were all over $400USD.
You will need to change your park brake shoes to the larger ones as well. Chances are all of your park brake internals are going to be rusted and siezed. You'll need the bellcrank, bracket, rubber boot and spring at very least. I ordered all the OEM pins and clips to but Im sure you could find substitutes. Most of them also came in the Raybestos spring kit I ordered.
