Hey Mud -

I just picked up a new project.

The truck started life as an 1986 HJ61 in NZ. It received a 1HD-T + 4speed auto swap before making the journey over to the US in the late 00's. A tree fell on it and the PO did a body swap with an '89 FJ62 (US spec). While he was putting it back together, his house (and garage) burned down in a fire. Brutal.

Sooo, now I have a late model LHD 60 series with a 1HD-T in it, but there are definitely some missing components to be sourced to get it running. Listing out a least some of the items I am in search of that I could use some help finding, in case folks have extras they are looking to sell:

  1. 12V Starter.
  2. Battery Trays (ordered SS from SS-trays.com)
  3. Injector pipes (ordered from cruiser parts, but still waiting for them to ship...)
  4. Fuel filter assembly (I got some recs in another thread to go with Racor rather than factory or to explore a dual, in line set up from a 79 series. I will likely make sure the engine spins with the injectors pulled before I invest in fuel filter assembly). I will also need to figure out how to get the fuel lines from the passenger side of the engine bay to the DS side of the engine bay.
  5. Air Conditioning compressor
  6. 12V alternator (EDIT: seems like this might actually be 12V from the factory, need to check when I am with it next)
  7. Vacuum reservoir. I didn't see one in the engine bay. I know these are under the body on my 40 series trucks, but I assume that might have not made it off the HJ61 body.
  8. Air Box (I picked one up from @Workhorse when I was out in CO recently. Amazing rigs he has in his garage. Jealous! Thanks again, @Workhorse -- its the nicest looking part on the truck, at the moment.)

There will be a laundry list of more generic 60 series components I will likely also need, eventually, but prioritizing the power train for now to validate I have something worth working on.

Including a few basic photos. Haven't really had an opportunity to clean it up and take good photos yet. Super stoked though! This is my first 60 series after a number of 40s, 80s and a 70.

Cheers!

Glad to help and am looking forward to seeing this in person once completed.

you’ll love the 1hdt in the 60! i have one in my 62 with a h55 and it’s amazing to drive!!
Sweet! Can't wait. I've had a HD in an 80 series and loved it. Pretty excited to get this rolling.

I am still waiting on CruiserParts to ship the injector pipes. Wondering what they are not telling me. I have a message out to Terrain Tamer.

Still looking for a 12V starter, too. For now, just planning on rotating the motor by hand with the glow plugs pulled. Planning to swap the oil & oil filter and run the diesel fuel directly from a fresh aux tank for now. Turn a few times by hand with plugs pulled to get the oil pump gear turning and get the top end lubricated.

With old gas engines, I've put oil in the cylinders before a first attempt at spinning the engine by hand. Is that necessary/advised for diesels? Fogging oil? 15-40W?

Cheers

I found some useful info in this thread that describes the Yanmar 6LP generic part number compatibility and am going to order an inexpensive 12V starter from amazon to get spinning! Still looking for an injector pipe source.

Spent the day yesterday cleaning out some space at my uncle's property so I have a place to work on this thing!

Nice rig! Copy with the Yanmar amazon starter - Im running one on my 1hz and its good.
did you check Partsouq for the injector pipes? They had new stock for 1hz when I was building mine.
For an Alt, Im using on out of a 93 FZJ80, again Im running a 1hz but I think the front ends of the motors are very very similar.
For a vacuum reservoir I got a generic from Jegs or Summit.
Im running a Racor 445 with either 10 micron or 2 micron filters, its probs a little overkill but it has an integrated primer which is nice and filters arent too hard to come by.

If you are not certain about the history of the motor now would also be a good time to at least pull and inspect or replace the big end bearings (BEBs).

Sweet - thanks for all of the info. I just got my starter. Looking forward to getting this thing moving soon. Copy on the Racor 445. @PBcuiser do you mind sharing a few photos of how you laid out your engine bay? Fuel filter and vac reservoir are the two items that are top of mind, but it would be super useful to reference when placement questions inevitably come up.

Not the best pic but you can see fuel filter in upper right and vac reservoir in lower left. Pic is taken from driver side fender. Happy to provide more info as you get further along!
