Hey guys,

My love for diesels is growing as my VW experience has been great, especially @ close to 40 USmpg! I have yet to pull up to Micky D's and fill up on fry oil, but I like having that option.

I'm always, now more than ever with rising gas prices, contemplating getting out of the petrol cruiser and getting a JDM diesel. There is a certain list of equipment that I would want in a HDJ-81, but I'm not sure what year has it all. Can some one let me know when the following was available in Japan.

- Rear axle changes to full floater with disk brakes when equipped with ABS
- Also gets viscous coupling HF2AV transfer case
- Introduction of 1HD-FT 24 valve engine
- Front and Rear factory lockers become an option.

I'm assuming this was 1993 like in the US, but the JDM models are always the cat's ass. This info was pilfered from Slee's site

not sure about Japan, but some markets got a FF and lockers in 91

The 1HD-FT was not available until 1995 prior to that it was the 1HD-T. Here are the specs on them:

1HD-T - 4.2L Turbo Diesel 165PS/37.2kgm (12 valve)

1HD-FT - 4.2L Turbo Diesel 170PS/38.7kgm (24 valve)

The HF2A was available on all models that were full time 4wd (I am pretty sure this was available in 91, Wayne would know for sure).

Front and Rear lockers were available in 91 and all rear lockers were FF axles.

Cheers,

From a proad 96' HDJ80 owner :D

1HD-FT was introduced to UK 1995

Viscous coupling introduced to UK 1993

Rear disc Brakes introduced to UK 1993 ABS standard

Front and rear lockers introduced 1990 when the 1HD-T first came here standard on all UK 80's. I think ABS optional

Do you mean that all UK HDJ80's have front and rear lockers as standard equipment?

Hey Joe, CLOSE to 40mpg. My TDI 2001 Bora (Jetta) averages 55 MPG!

Hell, once on a road trip I got 62.4MPG.

800+ miles to the tank (14 gallons) baby!

From what I learned in a thread a posted a little while back the FR/RR Lockers became available in 1990 in the JDM 81. Supposedly the 5-Speed with FR/RR Lockers is pretty darn rare, which is what I'm holding out for.

I think there is already a Diesel & FR/RR being imported... but its an auto

HZJ60 Guy, I have an old Skool (read: indirect inject TD not the TDI) Passat which is bigger and heavier... And made in Germany! :)

The TDI is an incredible engine. Too bad there are some concerns with the quality out of Brazil / Mexico.

Ocelot, there are some early production HDJ81's in Canada already. I think lockers is what makes your combo rare. I'm assuming that 5 spds aren't too difficult to find.

Gold Finger, that is very nice to hear! The same is true for all of the LX450's in Canada. Since, it very rarely snows in the UK, do the vehicles (80's) rust much? What is the going price of a good condition HDJ80?

aamiggia,
since you already have the lx, why not take the plunge and get an engine? then you have the cruiser you want. plus a really good diesel.

if you just want to sell and buy that might be the same cost. but much easier to do.

I don't share the same feelings about VW's built outside of Germany. My uncle owned a vw dealership for many years before switching to toyota and in those days the VW's from germany were no screaming units. they were riddled with problems and warrentee work.
so I don't feel that built in germany holds the same allure as built in Japan over north america.
but if you are happy and the vw is good that is great. I enjoy my Golf quite a bit. your mileage sounds reasonable. I too have gotten 40 mpg when loaded down and travelling quick. I have never achieved 60 mpg. but in the 50's a few times.

Daryl, you have a good point. he could stick a 1HZ in there and have his LHD diesel 80...
i heard of a pretty capable guy in Ontario that might be interested in doing the swap.
he will need a tranny to go with the engine, maybe a good tiem to switch to a 5 speed...
cheers

I would like to do the swap, but I've heard the price tag would run $10K+, besides I would not want to go with a non-turbo unit.

If I sell my truck I can get about as much as a lower end RHD JDM. If I keep it, I'll have to dish out 10 thou + to have a diesel. That's not worth it in my books. If I could buy a 5k US truck with 230k miles and do the swap, now you're talking.

This is probably all a pipe dream. For just under 20K CDN, theoretically, I could import a German LHD turbo diesel 80 with lockers, although the quality is not what the JDM units are and the mileage is in the low 200 km's.

From what FJ40-guy mentioned about the increased taxes in Germany come May 1st, I'm going to keep my eyes peeled.

if all goes well i should have a HDJ81 at our branch in Ontario the middle of June.
you might want to consider what you can get for under $20K if you can consider getting your head around a RHD...
;^)
cheers

Wayne, you're exactly right. I can't get my head around RHD no matter how much I try.

I would be VERY interested in test driving a RHD truck, but I don't want to go out to BC / AB to do it. Ideally I would like to have 1 vehicle that is a truck with resonable gas mileage, is that too much to ask for?

Please keep me informed when you get first HDJ81 in Ontario.

there is a LJ71 in stock there now, manual. you are welcome to give thato ne a try...
cheers

What's the location and number?

Is the place open on the weekends?

they are only open during the week but if they know you are coming they MIGHT arrange to be around.
519 524 6713 and ask for Mike.
since this is just barely up and running there will be some teething problems so be patient.
ask Mike for the address, i do not have it in front of me at the moment.
cheers

Did german HDJs get lockers in 1990? I thought they had to wait till 93?

I have not heard that rust is an issue I have never sen a rusty one. Price depends on year and condition service record milage etc.

I'm not 100% sure on the availability of lockers in Germany, but just because America didn't get lockers until '93 doesn't mean anything in the world of Landcruiser's.

Japan got them in 1990 as did the UK and I have read (translated) a few German ads that state they have lockers (3x differential sperre) front and back.
