Looking good!

A completion date in mind?

Thanks Dan. They said it should be ready next week. Need to figure out what/how to paint the Greenlee tool box.

I had a chance to visit last week. They're almost done. I'm the one holding them up. They're waiting for me to come by to inspect/approve the build before proceeding. It is very nice to work with someone who truly cares about quality as much as I do.

I will get them to install some aluminum sheet metal to cover up the inner fenders to keep water/mud out and install a piece of aluminum diamond plate on the font of the tongue where I use as a step.

Some pics. Pics of Dexter 7K dual brake'd oil lubricated axles, 16" new load Range E radial tires.

overall pic of the trailer. Greenlee box had the legs cut off. The lift handle were removed so they would not be flapping and making more noise. Greenlee box was welded to the trailer.

more pictures..... 2 spare tires mounted under the bed.

Pic of bed made of Douglas Fir. They'll get treated with some stain/sealer when I get it home.

still more pics...

Pic of jacks that will be used. Four 7K jacks will be used at corners to keep the trailer off the tires when it is being stored. This allows me to easily turn the tires to keep the oil lubricated bearing lubed to prevent them from rusting.

Having 4 jacks will allow me to level the trailer when I'm camping on top of the trailer.

All I can say is that it is bombproof...

The only thing I think it should have is an inside splash guard on the fenders, but you could do that with aluminum plate down the road.

They do great work, and no materials were spared!

Good luck with it, Pat

are you pulling it with a forty or hauling a 40 on it:D..............nice job.:bounce:
looks well built and solid..............

gawd damn charles, that is beefy! looks killer bro, i'll be inspecting it in person in two months and counting.......

Great looking trailer.

You might want to enclose the inner fenders. You will be amazed how much gravel/mud will end up on your trailer deck without them.

How in the heck are you going to get to your spare tires? When I have a flat, I pull to the shoulder of the road ideally past the fog line. (That is the white stripe to the tight of the lane). On many occasions there has not been enough room to get my jack under the axle of the trailer. This is due to the crown of the shoulder. If it is muddy, if it is worse since the trailer sinks a bit.

thinking the same thing...
plus the possible gashes from rocks, debris, and all.
Sure you don't want to put those up top?

Inner fenders are being installed. Don't want crap being thrown up into the bed.

My previous trailer had the spare tires mounted under the trailer. Never had any problems getting to the spares. Getting dirty is not a concern since you're going to get dirty when you have to replace a tire on a trailer. Mounting them on top or front of the trailer is not an option.

Also, I'm betting that I won't be getting both flat tires on the same side at the same time. This should allow me to get to a safe place to swap out tire.

For trailer owners: How many flat or ruined tires have you experienced because you ran over something?

I believe most tire problems are due to: dry rot, under inflation, overloading or wrong (car tires on a trailer) tires. Tire problems can be due to burning of spindle bearings too.

Disclaimer: I did not receive any compensation of any kind for documenting my trailer build.

This thread is to document a trailer I'm having built.

Trailer is being built by Hawn Freeway Trailer Sales & Service, Dallas, Texas. They are known for their custom trailer work. The owners, Mark and James are very nice guys and really know how to build a trailer.

Hawn Freeway Trailer Sales & Service, Inc., Dallas, Texas - Home Page - Manufacturer of custom bumper pull & gooseneck trailers. Leading manufacturer of utility trailers, landscape trailers, ATV trailers, double atv, equipment trailers, pipe top trai

I'm needing something this is capable of hauling 7K to 10K of weight without any issues. This will be a custom build to suit the needs of my not so stock FJ40. I'm estimating my FJ40 to weigh over 5K lbs.

Some requirements:

1. 96" wide overall width. This is needed for a tight parking space and I didn't want a 102" wide trailer.
2. Dual 7K axles with oil lubricated bath, electric brakes on both axles
3. Drive over and removable fenders
4. 16' bed with long tongue. Longer tongue = better pulling and easier to backup
5. Removable hitch with 2 5/16" ball
6. Ramps that slide out the rear instead of sides
7. 2 spare tires mounted under the trailer
8. LED lights
9. Douglas Fir wood decking for durability
10. Tool box mounted in the front
11. Plenty of stake pockets and u-bolts for securing cargo
12. Galvanized plating for rust resistance
13. 4 removable 7K jacks that can be mounted on all 4 corner.

I stopped by today and took some progress pics of it. I will be updating this thread from time to time as I get a chance to visit and take pics.

Charles

I'm looking around for a 10K rated car trailer for my FJ60 which at present weighs around 6K... what is the advantage of the removable trailer hitch?

What does the trailer weigh and what is it rated to haul in weight?

The only advantage of the removable hitch is theft deterrence.

I'm guessing it will weight at least 2500 lbs. I won't know until I put it on the scale.

The trailer could be rated to haul 14,000 max since it has dual 7K axles under it. It will be rated for 10K because I will never haul that much weight.

A 10K rated trailer will most likely have 2 5200 lb axles. The price difference between 5200 and 7000 lb axles is minimal. If I had to guess, I'm guessing the difference in the price is less than $200 for both axles. Tires and rims will cost a little more on the 8 lug 7K axles. 5200 and 6000 lb axles should have 6 lug axles.

The only difference being the axle tube wall thickness and 8 lug drums. They both use type 42 spindle.

Really nice Charles! Look forward to checking it out in HS soon. I do think you're gonna be a little heavier than you think though....Sucker oughta' last though!

Daryl,

I used it haul my junk to Hot Springs. Worked very well and did not feel heavy. I think I got better mileage towing my junk because the trailer tows so well and doesn't seem to have much rolling resistance.

The hub on my old trailer would get warm after towing on the highway. Now, the hub feels cold even after towing 80 mph.

Sorry it has taken so long to update. I got the trailer a couple weeks before the Southern Cruiser Crawl. I ended up having the swap out the trailer plug pigtail from a 6 conductor to a 7. Center pin is used for the backup lights.
