Hi All,

About 6 weeks ago I finally replaced my speedo cable on my 1992 Landcruiser 80 Series 1HD-T (Auto) as it hadn't been working for some time.

Everything worked great and no issues since the install, until now.

After a full day of off-roading everything was fine, but on the drive home the speedo dropped to 0. After inspection the cable became unscrewed from the transfer. I screwed it back in, but no luck. After another 30 minutes of driving it was out again.

Really stumped here on what it could be. Please help if anyone has had the same issue.

Thanks

Did you lubricate the internal cable when you assembled it?

Should use white lithium grease. I pull out the cable from behind the speedometer, place it in a gallon freezer Ziploc bag with a couple tablespoons of white lithium grease.

Then I pump more of that same grease into the cable housing from the top, then start feeding in the cable and add more grease after every foot of insertion.

Make sure both ends of the cable are properly set and secured and use pliers to tighten the nuts on the housing to snug them, not tight enough to strip the outside of the nut.

I'm guessing if it was dry, it set.ip.a vibration that allowed the nut to work it's way loose. The cable tends to wrap up, then release over and over and it causes lots of havoc until something shreds or breaks.

^^ A likely cause - also - is the path from end to end smooth? - No tight turns (as best you can) - tight turns will accentuate the 'wrap up and release' in BILT4ME's post above.
