Randomly scrolling through the menus/setting, I saw I could turn ECO on or off. Shut it off because the light annoyed, and boy has driving been night and day.
So many talk about the lag/dog poop poor throttle response. I've been drive around in "S+-" mode since I got it because it took you out of ECO mode.

I bought a throttle controller, but with ECO off, I'm not sure I need it. Truck is super responsive to throttle input. Well, I put one in and it is better :D

If you have issues with performance, and you havent disabled ECO mode, I'd suggest try disabling it. Heck, let me revise that; unless you want to keep the truck in ECO mode for some ungodly reason, disable it. You'll be glad you did. Granted, its not as great as a throttle controller, but if you dont want to go that route, its a huge improvement

What year did ECO mode become selectable?

The ECO light in the gx460 is just a light, it indicates when your throttle position is in the best spot for fuel savings. You can turn this light off in the multi function daily. I believe there is no shift map change or throttle response change not the gx460. There are changes though in some other Toyota models

it absolutely felt different to me. When its on, there felt a lagged off, it didnt, its not psychological, because i suspected it was just a light because thats what the manual says. I dont know. felt way peppier to me. Also, In my truck, it didnt follow what the manual said anyway. light was ALWAYS on, didnt go off on any condition the manual says the light would go off. YMMV

My 2011, the ECO light comes on and off based on my throttle input to indicate "efficient" (😂) driving. My steering wheel menu system has no option to turn it in or off.

My 2013 RX 450h hybrid, however, has a true ECO driving mode, with muted throttle response, sloppy steering, and wimpy HVAC fans. Yay....

I don't see an eco light on my 2010.

I turned off the indicator as soon as I bought the vehicle. I hate unnecessary dash lights, and wish I could turn off the Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane Departure Alert lights.

Per my 2022’s owner manual, the light is indeed only there to indicate when you’re driving “economically”. There’s no real eco mode, so no throttle or shift changes. The only way to really have a “drive mode” is if you have the Luxury trim with the adaptive variable suspension.

I find it ironic that an eco indicator is even present on a heavy, underpowered, V8 brick. LOL
If that’s what Toyota had to do in order to prevent the vehicle from getting auto stop/start or cylinder deactivation, count me in :)

@Acrad can you please confirm based on your personal experience that the eco light indicator turning on is also related to torque converter lockup?

I'll jump in with my experience here. On my base 2018, I don't think there's a way to disable the ECO light on the dashboard while in Drive. But there is a big difference in shift points and speed by moving the shifter to "sport". I hate the slow lazy shifts at 2k RPM when in D, so I always bump the shifter to sport and then upshift to 6th. This way it'll run through all the gears needed, but will actually downshift on inclines and hold gears longer while accelerating. Once at cruising speed in overdrive, it makes no difference at all, so the only change is under load.

My wife hates the snappy shifts in sport mode and has complained about my driving habits as a result. Again, I'm in "6" so I'm not manually upshifting, just using the more aggressive map from sport mode.

My manual, as i mentioned earlier, "SAYS" the same thing. In practice NONE of that happens. Not only does the light NOT shut off/turn on according to how I drive (stays only always, and I am always punching it), but more importantly, regards of what it says, I'm relaying real world experience. I personally felt the truck become much more responsive to throttle input

As others have said, putting into sport mode removes the response loop from the throttle control for more direct throttle input. Otherwise your stuck behind a PID loop that can't be tuned directly, unfortunately.

The only ECO I see is when I scroll through the options with the right steering wheel (thumb) lever that shows the outside temp, front wheel alignment, MPG, etc.
It does have an ECO screen with a bar that shows how you're driving, e.g.: the bar extends towards or away better MPG, depending upon driving.
I'm driving a 2013.

My 2014 has nothing related to eco mode on the steering wheel menus. I went through the center console vehicle settings and nothing there either.

I did find that I can set the distance and sensitivity for my parking sensors. That's pretty cool.
