I have finally fallen to clutches of my friends, prepared myself for some slow drives and purchased a 1988 FJ62 in pretty good shape. It is stock, really really stock. It has the standard windows and doorlocks, the AC was converted to 134 and charged. Underside has been power washed to get rid of the oil leaking from the oil pan (every bolt was loose).
We have changed the oil, lots of greasing, coolant flush along with a new thermostat as the old one was trashed.

Complete brake fluid flush and replacement along with 3 bad lines. I have a new screen and trans pan gasket comming and a new cooler to order from Summit, so a drain and flush is next. Tires (235/75R15) are still good so they got a balance and rotation. Brakes, hoses and belts are less than a year old.

Interior is in great shape so I bought full seat covers front and back along with some nice floor and cargo mats. Nice folks there at SOR. Needs new tunes but that comes later.

Now comes the fun part. I have a vacuum issue to track down. Not a lot of fun to discover your 4wd doesnt engage like you thought starting out on a trail where you need it. I have a Warn 9500i to get on it, the desire to get at least 32's maybe 33's under it. Oh, I have to do this all as inexpensively as I can.

I put a couple pics on here so that yes, it really does wheel even as a stocker. The pics are from this years 45 Run at Deer Valley. That was fun once we got out there, met some great people. I've been reading in the tech section so much my head is spinning there is so much info!
Anyhow, rambled enough for one night. Looking forward to many years of fun and meeting new people here.

Welcome aboard.

Just as addictive as crack, and even more expensive :D

Welcome to da club.

Welcome!

Other 62 owners can verify this, but I think you need to search for info on 4WD solenoids and options for replacement/modification.

There is a CHEAP solenoid that requires MINIMAL modification to make work. I think its stickied in the Q and A section here. I did it at the begining of summer, and its worked great thus far. My porblem was getting OUT of 4WD, so I had to cross the vac lines.

What trail is that BTW?
Looks familiar and fun!

Welcome to the addicion. My rig started like yours did...Hours of labor and THOUSANDS later its still only a work in progress.

I hope that if youre married, you have a good and stable relationship cuz it WILL be tested once youre hooked into this world.

ca62cruzr,
If you make it down a little further south for wheeling let me know. You and I have close to stock rigs and can do the same type of trails. I have a family ranch near yosemite and that would make a good staging point for a weekend wheeling trip. let me know as you get used to your new crusier.

I see in your first pic you've got the runny gas stain. I can't stand the one on mine. Does anyone know why/what causes it? I'm not even sure if mine still does spill gas, the tank was recalled back in 1989, but I haven't seen it change since I bought the cruiser two years ago...

It should look familiar, its Deer valley on the FJ45 run this year. That is the grey stocker that came in Saturday. I spent about 45 min BSing with you that weekend looking for ideas for mine.

Thanks for the invite Randy, I have a friend in Sutter Creek with a 60 that would make a good 3rd one weekend. We'll have to put something together before winter sets in.

I've seen the post for the solenoid fix, we are wondering if its that or something else, our concern is that the vacuum presssure is only at 14 and the research we have says it should be 15 min.

Thanks for the warm welcome all, happy to be here!

As stated in my solenoid fix writeup: Check and see if your driveshaft can spin when parked. If it can't then it's locked in 4wd and I'm pretty sure it's the $17 solenoid. If you don't want to spend money before troubleshooting let me know of you need normal measurements to compare and I can check mine.

Let me know what weekend you want to off road. I'd love to get another run in before winter hits. It's always ten times better when you go with the same rigs, then you have three times the spare parts. :)

mine did that. the lines on the charcoal canister were backwards. hooked them up correctly and it stopped spitting gas out around the cap.
