Continuing with the rebuild of my 1978 FJ40. The white steel roof and front grill need to be repainted.

What is the correct color code for the Toyota OEM white paint for these 2 pieces?

Thanks for any knowledgeable input.

Hey @wildcatter 264 - welcome! You have a few options, if you are wanting to paint your fiberglass roofcap and/or bezel.

The fiberglass roof cap was not painted, but is a resin that makes it the color that it is, however, most people end up painting it cignus white (or budget folks grab ford's wimbleton white, a close match) which is readily available at a paint shop, or can be ordered in rattle cans. My recommendation is a base/clear of T012 - Cignus White. You'll need probably need one quart (half gallon sprayable, with reducer) for the job, plus clear. That'll get your top and bezel looking snappy.

Last, depending on where your 78 is sourced, you may have a metal roof, as I've seen all manner of different types of cruisers being imported with various tops and retro-fits on the trucks. However, chances are you have a fiberglass top that has a riveted steel lip all the way around, and a riveted gusset that bolts to the top of the windshield frame.

While the search function would have answered your question, don't hesitate to ask, as you'll never know what you might learn in doing so.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks, dmaddox. I’m new to the FJ40, as you can readily see. I thought asking questions would get me sage advise, but I can see that those who consider themselves experts may not be very welcoming to newcomers.

My FJ40 is an original US spec truck which has been restored off frame about 20 years ago, but was parked for about the last 15 of those. Very little rust save the J panels, replacements for which are currently sitting in the garage. First priority is solving a few mechanical issues, then replacing the panels and making a few interior changes to get it closer to original, in a way I would like to use it.

As with fine rifles, all my tools are used, so this FJ will be a driver, not a garage queen. I have no use or plans for a show car.

Thanks for your help.

Would you care to guess how many times that exact same question gets asked?

I could tell by the name you were into rifles. This community is a lot like the shooting world. Sometimes thick skin is needed especially when it comes to newby questions. There are some questions that are asked a lot and that is ok. There are a few here that like to tell new folks about searching. Don't let it get to you, everyone here will go out of their way to help you and walk you through most any problem you come across.

Thanks, 70fj40. You guessed correctly so I’m used to hardball forums on rifles and shooting. ThIs seems pretty tame, there we tend to help newbies solve their problems though the occasional idiot is not unusual.

I’ve learned quite a bit on this forum and finally got my fj40 running nicely and I’m now working on the body. So far body pan and 90% of the metal is sound, so needed panel replacement will happen in the next few weeks.

Plan for final parts to be OEM wheels and appropriate size modern tires, eventually. Since it’s not intended to be looked at or shown but rather driven, I think most of the paint job can be saved and the new panels matched. Red it’ll stay, especially if I can establish that it’s freeborn red.

Everybody who asks this question immediately gets their hand slapped and told the answer is Cygnus White. I did my own research and it appeared to me that the roof of my 77 was 031 White, not Cygnus.

There's no requirement to follow the crowd. Make it yours, white, blue black, green or purple

I also decided to buck tradition and went with Krylon fusion gloss white. 6 rattle cans did the top and bezel. An hour of prep, 5 thick coats and it was done. Has held up nicely for a few years now. Slightly brighter than OEM but I like the results plus it was only about $50 for paint and tape. Good luck!

@wildcatter 264, I'm trying to understand this. You ask a question, @JackA answers your question by finding the answer using the search function and suggest you could use search too. Then, you thank him for his help. Later you suggest, he and some others are "idiots " for suggesting you could try using the search function.

You are correct, this site is pretty tame and civil and folks will be extremely helpful with any questions you may have. Search is a part of that. Folks around here are pretty passionate about Land Cruisers and want you to succeed with your projects. Sometimes search may net you more than one answer. Most anything about FJ4X has probably been covered on this site at one time or another. The archives run deep and wide.

I have some 012 Cygnus White and 031 White on hand. If you'd like, PM me and I can send you some samples on cards for you to try out.
Thanks for the offer. That’s very generous of you. I had already ordered a spray can of the 012 Cygnus white to try out. I also ordered a can of the Toyota gray and one of Freeborn red as I believe that’s the body color. I’ll try that on the rear cargo space as that’s now down to bare steel.

Glad you got the info you needed. I have found that if I type what I need in google or safari search, and preface it with ‘FJ40’ or ‘Landcruiser’ it will bring me back to MUD with the answer I need. I am getting better at the MUD search function but personally I still do better with the others.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of your 40.
