If trying to find a hard top to replace a soft top, will any year hard top fit any FJ40? For example if I have a '79 with a soft top, can I scour Craigslist for any year hard top? I know the hard tops come in pieces, top, sides, etc...how are they attached to the vehicle...posts/bolts? Thanks for the help.

A lot of years will work, but I would stay with the ones with the ambi door set up and the pop out windows on the side panels. Somewhere around '76-'82 should work good.
There should be threads in the tub frame to support the attachment of the side panels.
Is the '79 original soft top or aftermarket?
Check classified on here, they come around often.

The ambulance doors started in 75. I seem to recall that the ambulance doors changed shape in the later years like 79 or 80+, but you would want to verify that. Assuming your ambulance doors are the same I think you could use any 75-79 top. The 78+ tops have side vent windows, and would be nice. Before 75 the tub had a tailgate and the windshield frame had wiper motors on top, so potential problems on both ends.

The windshield header is different on the earlier models with the wiper assembly mounted in the top of the windshield frame. I think there were actually 3 different configurations of headers. The earlier models with a rear lift up hatch are different as well.

Other than the header, is the fitment the same? I'm running into this issue of the wiper cutouts being in the wrong places. If I cut in new spaces will the rest of the top fit properly?

I think soft top (FST) stopped the US in 73 or 74 so this would have been a hard top rig from the factory.
Try to stick with the top as close to your year as possible, certainly one with ambulance doors.

Put an ad on your local craigslist or the nearest big city for ‘FJ 40 top wanted’ with a couple of good photos, I have found several tops that way over the years.
