I think I found the culprit, not even connected !
I wonder if PO just disconnected it or something , no dash lights showing up

I'm going to tackle mine this weekend, when you remove the dipstick tube, does fluid come out? Do I need to drain the tranny first?.
No need to drain anything. Just pull the 2 bolts holding it in place and move it out of the way. helps quite a bit.
And yeah ^ getting that connector plugged into something might help. Inspect it to make sure the pins inside the connector are still intact and clean so you can make a solid connection. You will never be as close to it as you are now, embrace the suck and get it fixed right, then you won't have to think about it for another 300,000 miles

There should be wires to connect straight into this socket surely? I couldn't see any ends to plug it back in or push the multi coloured wires back in like the image higher in this thread shows.
Mind you im accessing this through the bonnet/hood so I cant see everything behind the starter which may be where they are dangling and corroding away!

Is this the same part that affects the reverse lights as well? My transmission shifts fine, but no lights to show which gear it's in and no reverse lights. It does shift a little harshly into reverse.

yep this feeds the reverse lights as well.

yeah if you are coming at this from the top its going to be really hard to get to the trans side of the wiring. Can you get under the truck and trace the wire up the from the gear position sensor to the splice point? Its possible if this has been unplugged for a while that the tran side of the wiring may have slipped back on top of the trans somewhere

So my connected is shot and even after I cleaned it out one prong is broken and I only get two of the 5 dash lights showing up
What's the best step now with re-wiring ? I don't want to screw it up and no idea where to get replacement connectors like that

Don't worry about trying to find replacement connectors. It sounds like you only have a wire or two that need to bypass the connector. Simply cut the wires back where you can identify them and cut/strip them. Then just connect the bad connection (2 wires) together with a piece of wire and a male/female spade connector (If you plan on unplugging them again) or just wire them together if not.

I want the Ecu connected to the transmission again (or yet better said just want electrics back to the transmission so they show up on my dash again and gear changes are smooth )
Is it better to cut the connectors off and just hard wire them together or better use proper connectors

Did this fix your problem? Have the same issue, vehicle clunks when shifting from P to R, P to D
