Just finished up installing a hand throttle on the cruiser to help bump the RPM's for OBA and possibly winching. Although there's been no need for winching just putting around town. I need to hit the trails... badly.

I originally bought the SOR kit to add a factory Hand throttle, but aborted that project after wrestling with all the bracketry. It didn't seem to pull the throttle without really pulling hard, thus putting a lot of strain on the components. So I got one here from Nathan for $20 shipped. It's been sitting on ther shelf for many months and I decided to make it happen.

EDIT: Found throttle kit for sale here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/sale-parts/193625-hand-throttle-cable-foe-sale-$20-each.html

ADDED: Knob removal. I struggled with this even though it seems very simple. The knob is spring loaded and is removed by pressing in and turning to the left. Once removed you can see that it attaches by a small T fitting at the end of the cable. To put the knob back on simply line up the slots on the knob with the T fittings and press down and turn to the right until it locks in place.

First I slid it through the firewall to determine the distance and how it lined up. I chose to use the hole just above the factory wiper switch on the dash (73 FJ40). I may have to spin the wiper switch behind the dash as the electrical plug won't come off without removing the throttle at the dash but we'll see. Then I determined I needed to add another throttle attachment at the engine. I ended up settling for a generic choke kit in the "Help" section. It's way more than I needed but did provide for the small bracket I needed to attach to the throttle.

looks good, i was thinking about the same thing, Is there anyone who has used an FJ62 OEM one in place of the stock FJ40 Choke??

even though my cruiser is far from oem, i would like to keep the dash as clean as possible!

Next I determined where the throttle cable mount would bolt to the bracket on the motor and where the throttle cable ended. I drilled a hole in the aluminum bracket and attached the mount, then used an existing hole on the throttle linkage to attach the new adapter used from the choke kit. Two bolts and away I go! Wow this was too easy!

Yes it was. I had the throttle screwed all the way in (clockwise) and as soon as I spun the knob (counterclockwise) the cable slacked instead of tightened. Oops. So back to the drawing board.

After setting the knob correctly I reset where the cable mount should go (used an existing hole this time) and fabed a quick extension to lift the new cable up and out of the way of the primary throttle cable. Then I determined where the end of the cable would be and I was able to use the same bolt as before to attach the second cable attachment.

You can see how the cable is attached to the throttle assembly in PIC 1. I was careful to make sure the bolts and attachment were nice and narrow as it would interfere with the throttle body at wide open throttle (see PIC 3).

Pic 2 shows the final assembly and how it sits nice and high. It's not going to win any awards at a car show but it works nicely. :)

This should work the same for a TBI350, yeah?

Works with any motor. Just make a connector at the throttle bracket and voila! Just make sure the knob is in the off position when you install it all or you'll do it twice like I did...

Good input! Thanks, Dom!

For the V8 crowd... I made a simple bracket from flat bar stock for a choke cable.

I ordered a throttle today and will do something similar on the linkage side.
Thanks for the info.

I used to use a high end bike shifter type mechanism - attached to the shifter with the cable running down thru the tranny tunnel and up to the engine - allowed me to keep my hand on the shifter (or closer to the steering wheel) while strapped in and wheeling something steep....

Abandoned it after going to TBI and a lower crawl ratio.

Still like the dash version you did - great for air compressors, etc.

That Ramjet is sik!!!!!!!!
