H55 fifth gear wont engage and jumping

So the other day I was out for a drive and noticed once or twice that when I engaged fifth gear it would jump out. We stopped for lunch and on the drive home the problem got steadily worse- instead of jumping out of gear, it would refuse to engage at all above speeds of about 80 KMH. Now fifth gear will barely engage at all- even at speeds as low as 20-30 KMH. This all happened in the span of about 500KM. While I'm trying to do a search on this- does anyone have any idea what could cause this and so quickly?!!

If you're very, very lucky, I suppose it would be possible for the retaining nut on the back of the mainshaft to loosen and cause things to move out of position. You can check that by pulling the bearing cover off the back of the T-case. I have heard of some shifter issues too, but I'm not familiar with that aspect od it.
