78 fj40 was driving alright, then got backed up a driveway and parked in reverse. Now it won’t shift out of reverse. Stick won’t go back into the reverse gate, but will move side to side.

Any ideas appreciated.

Have you tried backing it up a little more and then seeing if it will shift?
Yeah...backwards, rolled forwards, shifted between 2wd/4wd. No dice.

Not an unheard of problem. Not common, but not unheard of. Remove the shifter , shift out of reverse and into neutral with a screwdriver, put the shifter back in. That's it everything is happy now.

Mark...

Check for wear on the bottom of the shift cane when you remove it. Mine was worn and would allow the H42 to become stuck in gear once in a while. I chose to buy another cane in better shape to solve this issue but a competent welder can fix it as well. Good luck! :)

With the shifter out, a bit of prying doesn’t seem to be moving the reverse rod back into the neutral position. Doesn’t seem like any of the shift rods want to budge. Any follow up thoughts? Thanks!

is it still on a hill with preasure on the trans? it needs to be "relaxed" either with clutch in with wheel chocks or on a level area.

Did it with chocks and clutch in.

With chocks on the wheels and the hand brake set move the transfer case into neutral. Start the cruiser and push the clutch in and out a few times and see if it will shift with the clutch push into.

The Following Video & Still Shot Photos are @ksrunner 's Stuck in Reverse gear H42 Transmission , Shift Tower , Internals

Photographed through the Cane Mounting Hole , The 2 Dowel Pins for the Retainer are Solid and not worn

The Cane itself Tip Looks good , no chips or excessive wear

Yeah...did that too. I’ve driven it around in reverse in high and low as well.

There is evedence of the entire shift tower being removed at one time in the past by the PO ,

Note: the fresher then the rest looking round Socket rotation marks in the Fossilized Grime atop the Tower 14mm Hex tool fasteners

Note the 3 slots ?

Note that there is a spring loaded button in the reverse slot that you need to push out of the way (to the right) to get your prying tool in the slot.

so Pin_Head ,

Assuming we are able to free up the transmission using both your suggestions & the Valued input and applied techniques of the

folks above , Do u have any thoughts or theory as to what caused this and or how to prevent it from happening again anytime in the future ?

I have never had to deal with this issue nor have ever heard of it being commonplace or otherwise ?

The truck was shifting normally one minute then then this failure occurs for no good reason , it was NOT being driven harshly or we were not off road or in 4wd etc , just over-landing at low to med speeds ...........

thank you in advance for any input or ideas ..............
