Someone school me on the H41 vs H42. I know the 1st gear ration is lower in H41.
What about the Length. Is it a direct bolt in place of H42?
Thanks.

The length is exactly the same and they use the same case. H41 has a 5:1 low gear vs 3.5:1 in an H42. 4th gear is 1:1 in both.

It is possible to put the gears from an FJ40 H41 into the case of an early FJ60 if you want to run a split case. If you get just the gears, make sure to get the reverse idler from the original transmission, otherwise it will be noisy in reverse.

Yep they’re identical to the H42 - just taller gears in the same case, but you do need to watch out for the splines on the rear. I’ve got one of each in my garage right now. From the outside you can’t tell the difference.

Yes-a good transmission. Watch splines, of course, but all Land Cruisers should have come with this fully syncro'ed transmission. I put gears from an older one in my FJ60's case and it's been solid for 10+ years. Toyota doesn't get credit for this, but they were ahead of GM with this transmission. GM was selling a truck 4 speed (SM465) with an unsynchronized first gear up through 1991.

Depending on your setup and intentions, you can run the H41 with 3.83’s and be geared higher for highway drive, while effectively being lower in the first gear. Gets you lower in low range 1st and higher for way driving, I think 1911 on here is set up that way

3.83? Not a Toyota ratio.

FJ60s tried to do this with 3.70 diffs. 10 pinion teeth, 37 ring gear teeth. But 3.83 is not a thing in Toyota land.

My bad, but was thinking 3rds from a 60

I think you made a typo. :)

I am running an H41, Orion Transfer case, stock (for my year) 3.70 diffs and 33" tires. A great combination; low gears on the trail, rubber overdrive for the highway, low first gear for starting out from full stop. I can run 65 mph at about 2500 rpm.

IIRC most H41s in the NA market were behind B series diesels with a different input shaft. Be careful to check before you buy.

Since we are talking about transmissions for FJ40's, is a H55F basically a H41 with a 5th gear for overdrive?

Yes and no. gear wise yes, but case is different and uses a split case transfercase. Not a direct bolt in.

The H41 going into my '71 FJ40 is also from an '84 HJ47 (Australia). It'll be mated to a split transfer case from an '85 BJ45 (Belgium). I'll hang the combination off the rear of my 4-speed bellhousing. I was concerned about the length (the transfer case has a drum parking brake on the rear output) and clearance issues with the tubular crossmember, but it turns out the later combination is actually about 1/4 inch shorter than the earlier H41/one-piece transfer case combination that was in the '71. Still, I bought a replacement tubular crossmember from 4PlusProducts that I'll have welded in further back.

What would you like to know? I have installed/run both in a FJ40.

The transmission housing is the the same length for both.

The input/output shaft's spline counts can change depending on the engine it is mated to.

There are also changes depending on the transfer case used (e.p. one-piece versus "split" type.)

Good luck!

Clearifying the above information. If I pulled the gears out of a 40 series h41 they will fit in the h42 on the h42 shaft? I have a late 40 series h42 with 19 spline output. The h41 I have has a cut output shaft to fit a toybox, so I am trying to determine if the h41 could be made whole again using the h42 shaft to run without the toybox.

I installed H41 gears into the H42 box that came with my FJ60. Yes, they fit on the main shaft. But everything else gears, counter shaft, and input shaft have to come from the H41.
