One of my jobs for 20 years on ships was operation of the Evaps, sea water distillation plants. It is some of the purest water in the world. Boilers concentrate any containments at the rate of 10% an hour and still would do surface and bottom blows on them to keep it low.
Measured TDS at output discharge and if the electric connectivity between the probes even blipped above zero we would flip it from make up feed water to potable water. And ran oxygen scrubbers so no gasses were in it. Back in the day would inject Bromine into it to prevent bacteria growth, they used to do it for bread as well. Then discovered that it can cause cancer so went back to chlorine injection. Those were the only tastes to it. You get used to it
Never cared for organized camping but would occasionally drive into one to refill water. The Forest Service has the occasional hand pump scattered around especially at boat launches and would drive to one if it was nearby, 5-10 miles away, to refill. Used the collapsible 5 gallon jugs for a long time then finally broke down and got the Scepter military potable water containers.
As I moved away from tent camping to cabins dropped down to a couple of 2.5 gallon Scepter containers. But many cabins in Canada and Mn. do not have potable drinking water and you have to go fill your own containers. Those I still take the 5 gallon containers, ones with potable water at the sink I only carry the 2.5 gallon for day use in the woods.
Used to let the dogs drink out of the numerous water sources in the woods until blue green algae bloom started to hit. It will kill a dog so started packing water for them as well as me.
Once I started carrying water for them I started drinking more myself which was a good thing. Busting brush for miles all day I used to get cramps bad at night sometimes. Would do the funky monkey and end up on the floor flopping around, the Ex was no help she would say tell me again how what you do is fun? Thought I was drinking enough water but once I started carrying more was drinking more during the day and the cramps stopped. For the most part. Bananas, calcium supplements, pickle juice, they aren't the answer. Drink more water.
Water is good stuff and if I was younger and still camping a lot I wouldn't hesitate to get the RO system that
@Acrad has. Lots of water available here but like being at sea it is not a good idea to drink it.
