GX460 & GXOR B.S. thread (11 Viewers)

We've been kicking around picking up a 60 Series in recent months to turn into a resto-mod build of sorts but after lots of number crunching and reflection I am happy to report that we've settled on keeping our current 2022 GX460 alongside of the GX550 Overtrail we plan to purchase next fall. I plan to build out the 460 to some degree and run it for years to come instead of throwing $30-40K+ at a tired 40 year old 60 Series that will be less refined, less comfortable and less reliable. Now to start the build planning stage and possibly start amassing parts.

That would be the smart move IMO. I had a FJ55 Iron Pig in the late 70's and 80's. Loved it. When I went to the Toyota Dealer where I ended up getting a 19 GX460 they had an Iron Pig almost identical to mine sitting on the floor. Not for sale.

I checked it from stem to stern and a lot of memories came back. But what hit me the most was how primitive it was compared to vehicles now. In fact it was part of the driving factor that sold me on the 460. A 60 would be cool an 80 was my favorite. But at this point in my life don't think I'd go back even that far. I may end up doing the same as you and likely will in ~4 years or so.

I thought I’d miss the 2020 Land Cruiser the most but I’ve rarely even thought about it since selling it 14 months ago. I’m still a sucker for 43’s and 45’s and the 60, I might have one at some point in the future but for now that’s been put on the back burner.

The GX is here, we’ve owned it since new and it’ll be paid off in two years so why not keep a known quantity?! The misses will get her Overtrail and I’ll be keeping my F250 Tremor for truck stuff. I think the 460 lightly and tastefully modded will fit in well and continue to double as the around town daily.

I agree college isn't for everyone. Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) is a very strong advocate for blue collar education and filling non technical jobs, e.g.: mechanics, construction, utilities, etc.
But I also tell anyone who want's a degree and can't figure out what to major in, to just get a business degree. A business degree will take one into any industry and job market and as such, at lest, you'll be the manager of the guy flipping the burgers, and not flipping burgers yourself!

Regarding a PE, to me it seems that a PE is more useful toward construction and large scale projects, not very applicable to miniature/micro components in the medical device field. Although it may seem "willy-nilly" to develop a medical device without a PE, for FDA approval, the process is far more intensive than anything a PE could do for the product. I'm speaking personally as an engineer with over a dozen U.S. and international patents on medical devices.

There is an absolute coolness about older vehicles, like that Fj55 above, an old 40 series, a VW microbus/transporter, an early Willy's, old Porsche's, and the list is endless, but as you mentioned, at my (our?) age, I'm loving the heated/cooled seats, multi-climate zones, a quiet cabin, nice sound system and a smooth ride.
Anything listed above would be a "Sunday driver" only.
There's been a bunch of cars I've wished I didn't get rid of, like '74 2002 (model, not year) BMW, my Porsche's, '66 Mustang and others.

I have three years of college and also 2 apprenticeships. Coupled with over 20 years experience in either construction, fabrication or engineering. Ironically I work for a rather large well known company, but NDA and all that fun stuff so I can't say who it is.

Same boat with facilities, personnel management, safety and security after my aircraft maintenance experience. I've made a personal vow that I'll complete a BS (12 credits remaining after beginning in '94 ) before my five year old and an MBA before my two year old complete their high school commitments. I learn hard.

Oh I agree. I have been on both sides of the coin and in the end the old iron just doesn't check all of the boxes because they end up being glorified Sunday cruisers. While the GX build will be boring by my standards it'll be reliable, capable and have a known personal history. Parts availability, service, and aftermarket trump the older stuff as well. It's not the fun or flashy decision but it's the easy and safe decision.

I have no plans to go bigger than 33's, maybe a lo-pro bumper and definitely sliders and a roof rack.

I don't regret the 35s but there is no doubt they take a toll on things... I think I'm going to have to do an overhaul of the front suspension this winter.

The only thing I DO miss about my old cars was the ability to work on them without ALL the computers and plastic!
The days when you could actually see the engine, in fact, even look straight down and see the ground through, from the top of the engine!
And hand space? The ability reach almost anything in the engine bay, e.g.: plugs (ALL the plugs), alternator, starter, hoses and belts, etc. Don't get me started!!

I saw the video fromthe Car Care guy about coolant induced head gasket issues and scheduled my truck for a coolant flush. I thought it was done already, but not positive. If it is original, I will have to plan on pro-actively doing the driver side headgasket ib the next few years.

He also liked my Subaru SVX, but it didn't help me get any more than the scrap metal value when it came time to unload it.

I like Doug, he's got great taste in cars very similar to mine, but I doubt it moves the needle in terms of market price. I do think they're probably a the bottom of market right now, and if these new V6s continue to have issues, ours will likely hold their demand for years to come.

Is this one equipped with the new e-KDSS? I'm really curious how that compares to the version in our trucks. How's it perform crossing speed bumps at an angle and other low-speed and off-camber bumps? I don't mind getting tossed around in the trails, but that's one place our rigs really remind me of their true nature when cruising around the city.

E-KDSS is only on the GX550 Overtrail models. The LC250 gets the manual swaybar disconnect.

I half figured that's the case, but I haven't exactly poured over the spec sheets. I guess the question still stands though, even if I got the terms and tech wrong: how does is do with rear end sway over low speed obstacles with the sway bar attached?
