I need a back seat for the kid, and an automatic for the wife. Those are really my only set requirements.
What about MPG??
Personally, if I were to look for daily driver, but just for commuting to work, I'd look at a used Porsche Boxster. Yeah, they don't have a back seat, but the grin factor is really high!

I would go Miata... less expensive to buy, less expensive to own/maintain/insure, less expensive parts, less expensive to fuel... and basically the same grin factor

I wish I could justify an NA Miata. I just need a tiny bit more practicality than that. Another factor to consider is that I doubt I'll keep whatever I buy for even two years. That's about the normal pace of turnover for me and by that point I'll have the GX paid off and the temptation will be high to step up.

Before I bought the Civic, I test drove a Kia EV6 and it put my tender heart in a blender. I really liked that car. It being brand spanking new to the market at that time with huge markups and questionable reliability, combined with the upfront costs of installing charging infrastructure, ended up ruling that out. But I still think about that car and maybe 2025 will be the year I go electric. I just need another jalopy to get me to work and back in the meantime.

I just drove to work. It took an hour to cover 12mi on the highway. I don't mind a clutch in this traffic, but high revving fun isn't really on the table. I hardly ever rev my Civic over 3k, there isn't really time to before you have to get back on the brakes. I just need decent mileage and Bluetooth connectivity on the cheap. The fun factor might just be using the tracked tiedowns or doing little upgrades like suspension bushings. Fun is always relative. I've had fast cars, but they weren't my favorites or even the most fun to own. I liked my 80 series more than my WRX, but neither one lasted me two years.

I've now highjacked this thread for a whole page. Oops.

Nah, R34 Staega Wagon or bust. You know, for practicality.

I found a first gen GS300 for sale last night. Sure it's 30 years old, and the motor was blown, but I still needed to be talked out of it. I have obscure tastes and I'm a glutton for punishment.

I feel your commuter pain. For over two years I commuted from San Clemente to Pasadena, 86 miles EACH way.
I know L.A. traffic. That's why I live and work in south O.C.

I prefer the R33 over the R34 personally.

I prefer a Soarer over a Skyline, but again I'm weird.

My colleague commutes from Huntington Beach to Universal in a 3rd gen GS350 with about a half million miles on it. I couldn't do it myself, but to each their own. I've always had long commutes, but they've typically been more fun than this. Growing up, I was 35 miles from my high school on mountain roads in Colorado. College, I commuted from Ojai to Santa Barbara on Hwy150, and that's a blast. Here in LA, I lived in Topanga for a decade. Now, I'm valley people with a valley person job. It ain't exciting, but that's the cost of growing up I guess. At least there's always Mulholland.

s***, I wish I could justify (aka afford) an ND Miata... had an NA and an NC Club 6MT PHRT (best car I've owned) and hope to buy an ND Club as a 40th birthday present to myself... in 2031

The Miata has the best manual transmission left on the market. It's worth buying for that one detail alone.
I'm a die-hard Miata fan and I'd love to agree but the Civic Type / Integra Type S and Porsches (6-speed cars) take the cake. Honestly the GR86 has better shifter feel out of the box than the ND, too. I'd still have the Miata though.

My daily is the bmw 430i convertible it gets pretty good gas mileage especially on freeways (34+).

However having the bmw compared to Toyota engineering is frustrating as the GX is easy to work on (and really doesn’t have many issues) the bmw needs to be complemented daily so it doesn’t get mad and leak coolant or do other dumb**** Still fun to drive though

Been there done that!

It seems that Hyundai/Kia is willing to offer some pretty good incentives to get their EV stock off the lot. Particularly, the Ionic 6 sedan has some really attractive lease terms. They had to make the terms attractive, because they sure didn't make the car attractive. I'm an old Subaru fanboy, and even I think this car is fugly. Good thing you don't have to look at it from the driver's seat.

So, I might go electric sooner than I thought. We'll see if those offers hold up in person, but the used market is so messed up right now I might be able to justify it, even if only by considering the alternatives.

I like the Ioniq 6.

With your commute, it'd be nice to not ever have to gas up again. Just plug in when you come home from work and it's topped off the the next days commute!
Also, nice and quiet, no shifting.
Personally I wouldn't mind one for commuting and around town and just stick the GX on the side of the driveway for Costco and overlanding!

I do too. Ugly can be a good thing. I've owned a Juke and an SVX, so it's obviously not a deal breaker.

With the GX in the stable, I've got options for a commuter that I never had before. Basically, my vehicles always had to do double duty as a mountain/camping car and commuter. That's why I went through so many Subarus over the years. Now that I have a dedicated car for not just mountain trips, but also Home Depot and the opera, it opens up options for the monday-friday grind that I never had before. I can now shop EVs without worrying out breakover angles and Jerry can mounting solutions, not to mention range anxiety.

...but also Home Depot and the opera...
Don't forget the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek!
Learned to ride a 2-wheeler bike in the parking lot of the Bowl when I was just a tyke.
Saw ZZ Top and George Thorogood at the Greek, great show.
