Does anyone know if the 4 low lever automatically locks out or something, at speed on a GX460? We are thinking that might be a good new option for us, but our bulldog likes to jump from back to front seats, and are concerned maybe she could kick it into 4 low going down the highway.

Any insights would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Erica & Abe

On the gx470, you have to be stopped and put the transmission on neutral and then change the transfer case lever from hi to lo. There’s no way to accidentally engage 4lo at speed. It’s locked as far as I know.

I don’t know how it works on the gx460, but I’m guessing it’s the same.

Safer to keep animals in crates or secured on the highway anyway!

The 460 has an electronic Hi/Lo actuator, so I'm sure it has a safeguard built in that will not let it engage at speed.

Who will be the guiniepig to test this one out?

I have been concerned about the DAC button myself with my wife driving and plopping her phone or purse down next to the shifter.

But having the Center console apart this weekend it looks like a total PIA to swap switch’s with say 2nd Start button.

I think you need to be in 4Lo and under 15mph for he DAC to work. I'll try it tonight on my way home. Not sure I have the nuts to throw it in 4Lo on the fly though :)

Most likely on the 460 you also need to be in P or N to for the LO actuator to work. And yes pretty sure for DAC you have to be in 4 low already. If you guys have your owners manual it's all listed in there.

Don’t worry about DAC. It won’t activate unless you are already in 4Lo. If you press the DAC button while in hi, it will flash the LED light on the dashboard but it never goes solid. I’ve tried this several times while off-road and it won’t engage.

Moreover, if you are having a check engine light problem and the other vsc led goes on dashboard, DAC won’t engage even in 4Lo and going slow.

FYI. There is nothing in place to stop the 470's Hi/Lo lever from moving while driving down the road. I was able to bump it into N at speed while I was in Drive. I don't feel like dropping my transfer case, so I didn't try to put it in L, but let's just assume you can.

I thought it was hard to move the transfer case lever from hi to neutral to lo when going say over 40 mph. Heck, I can barley move it from hi to neutral when stopped. I'm gonna try it tomorrow...well at least the part going from lo to neutral. I'm not crazy enough to try it from hi to neutral to lo while going over 40.

@Arailt how fast were you going?

I was going about 35-40mph. I tried it when I was stopped in Drive and I couldn't get it to move, so I mistakenly assumed that it wouldn't move at all when it was in Drive. To my surprise, it easily went into N while I was driving. It's probably easier to move because the gears are turning.

If it's unloaded (i.e. not acceleratingn or engine braking), there'd be no significant resistance on the gears to prevent stuff from moving. When you're stopped in Drive, the t-case is loaded up with torque from the transmission.

Oh, I was on the gas leaving a stoplight, going up a hill, in Drive, and there was resistance on the gears. Slipped right into N with hardly any effort. It felt like moving the manual t-case on my old TJ. It scared the s*** out of me though because I was sure it wouldn't let me.
