Hoping to get some insight on what direction I should go with a shifting issues on my 08 470.

The issue: when asking for acceleration around 30 MPH, the car seems to hesitate a bit and then harshly downshift. The feeling ranges from a slight thud to feeling like I got lightly rear ended. It happens most often when I am coasting around a corner, such as getting on to an on ramp, turning on a street, or accelerating out of a sharper turn. Will happen on a straight away as well sometimes. It’s worth noting that it only seems to be doing this in one gear.

Back story: I bought this vehicle at 186,000 miles earlier this year and have been fixing it up. Car had a lot of issues and was cheap, but the previous owner did state that it had thrown a P0894 due to a trans cooler line leaking at 173,000. It drove fine and didn’t have the codes when I looked at it. so I bought it.

Did a drain and fill on the trans and it was pretty dark and smelled a bit burnt. Waited around 5,000 miles and did another drain and fill with the fluid coming out pretty much the same, if not slightly better.

So far if out around 15,000 miles on it since I bought it, and besides for this one issue it shifts great. I’ve towed small trailers and even road tripped from Virginia to Maine just fine.

Not sure if it’s my paranoia but it feels like the down shifting issues is getting worse (if only slightly). Really want to make this car last, my local mechanic doesn’t quite know what to do other than a tear down by a trans shop, any and all advice welcome!

My rig was doing that and it was fixed with 1) full trans fluid replacement (Valvoline MaxLife), with a pan drop/filter change and 2) replacing the harness inside the transmission (not hard to do). The trans harness in these can develop shorts/connection issues after 16+years of sitting in hot transmission fluid. You can do all of that for less than $200 in parts and half a day or so of work.

Did you notice and obvious wear on the harness when you dropped the pan? I have yet to drop it but that’s the next thing that’s on my list.

No, it looked perfectly fine. I think the issue is internal breakage in the wires, issues with the connectors, and/or the wires becoming saturated in ATF. The harness is a $60 part from your local Toyota dealer. I'd just replace it as opposed to inspecting it. You do need to pull the front driveshaft to get at the connector, but it's an easy job.
