Most of the coilovers that I am finding are actually for FJ Cruisers. I know they fit but given that the GX is much heavier and comes with the 4.7 are the spring rates correct? I see alot of them installed so I was wondering do you request heavier springs or do the FJ springs seem to work out fine?

I ordered Gabriel shocks/struts for an '07 4Runner V8 for my '07 GX and I really like the ride. It's firm but compliant, what I wanted for retaining a nice ride but being able to tow my 3000lb camper or haul a 600lb bike on my hitch rack. If you're looking at suspension options, treat your GX as a 4th Gen 4Runner V8 for shopping purposes.

Id vote no. The GX is 500 or so lbs. heavier curb weight. I think you would just want the 'heavy' spring FJ option or maybe 700# springs. I think the stock FJ springs for example are something random like 619# springs for reference. I dont know much about GX's though!

Either way, if you are shopping adjustable coilovers, you should be able to dial it in..a little extra preload might make up for the little bit of weight difference.

Thx...I see where Fox lists the same part numbers for Prado 120's and 1st Gen FJ's and 4th Gen 4Runners.

I have the entry level Fox 2.0s ( might as well be Bilstein 5100s) on my FJ. I wouldnt trust them with more weight....but they arent really "real" coilovers that you can adjust ride height independent of preload.

I'm sure some real GX owners will chime in on whats cherry soon enough!

Kyle at treaty oak would be a great resource. Am I missing something here though? At least Dobinsons and toytech make GX470 specific suspension kits. Is there a reason those aren’t on your list. One made in Australia the other is USA made, both first world countries which is another plus.

If you get coilovers from whoever, you can request different spring rates. I have 700# Radflo’s on my GX, a lot of people like #650’s.

Some list Lexus and some don't. But everywhere I look that does uses the same part numbers for FJ's and 4 Runners incuding Toyotec.

@dcg141 i recall the same issue two years ago when I was researching the front Bilstein 6112s coilovers that came with my gx470. These are the 2.5” diameter shocks with the beefier shaft.

Bilstein didnt list the GX470, but had the V6 4R, V8 4R and the FJC listed as separate part numbers. Mine turned out to be the FJC ones with 600#/in springs. I put the details somewhere on my build thread.

I have no additional weight up front (all stock) other than bigger tires and aluminum skid plates, but it rides real smooth up front.

If I were to add weight up front like a hidden winch tray and winch, I would probably need the 650#/in coils. Maybe 700#/in if you also get a new front bumper with a winch and second battery.

FWIW, when shopping for my struts/shocks, whatever was listed as fitting the 2007 4Runner V8 also fit the V6 models. A quick Bing search reveals 366lbs for the V6 engine weight, and 562lbs for the V8. The FJ's are V6 only but utilize a different chassis so it's not quite apples-to-apples. If everyone is making essentially the same springs for FJ's, Tacomas, 4R's and GX's whether V6 or V8, then they're putting a lot less thought into it than you are. I'd follow the recommendations the other members have made and get something adjustable so you can achieve the height you desire and maintain it as you bolt on goodies. Mine is a DD and tow vehicle that realistically (and sadly) will see very little off-pavement driving as I need it to haul motorcycles, some of which will be on a hitch-mounted carrier (up to 600lbs) so the airbags and auto-leveling to me are worth their weight in gold. Your results may vary!

I'm running Bilstein 6112s and believe they have 600# springs up front. Would prefer 650# springs.

Thx for all the input. Mine is going to be used as a dd and a tow vehicle but my trailer is aluminum and weights around 1200 ilbs fully loaded. I also maintain our motorcycle trail system and will use it to access trials with our not so great fireroads. My current driver is a Libery with JBA coilovers and UCA's with an ARB bumper, 4.10 gears and trutracs front and rear. Sounds like I need to make sure I'm in the 600 lb range on springs.

My only complaint is they use GM balljoints. Not a fan as we had fleet GM trucks at one company I worked at. Cheep part but we went through a lot of them.

Were these 3/4 ton trucks in your fleet? It is a GM 3/4 design made in the USA and sealed/cured with Cerakote.

650# without additional weight? Or you have extra weight up front?

This is where it’s subjective. I read a post that someone put 650# springs upfront and they thought it was too firm without any extra weight.

So, this personal preference is what’s makes it so difficult to fine tune the suspension.

I think they have them made because they have rebuild kits for the joint. Only issue I have had is with the rubber boots cracking but they sell those also. I have had good luck with mine and I tend to be hard on them. No telling how many times I have been going to fast and bottomed out hard going across a deep rain rut.
