I was curious about the gold pakage on the 80s. My dad's moonglow 95 came with the gold package but the rear hatch lock was still chrome. He found a wrecked 94 with a gold package and a gold rear hatch lock. Needless to say he bought the lock, but that is the only 80 I've ever seen with a gold rear hatch lock. Anyone know why?? and its not a cheap dealer plating, or aleast as far was we can tell.

Most "Gold" packages are dealer installed by local platers on the lot - must have just missed the hatch lock when they did his (or a PO had it done that way specifically). Every gold package I've seen on an 80 had this piece plated.

BTW - I know someone who would be interested in buying the chrome one he's replacing ... ping me if your interested.

my LX is the same the hatch lock is silver, I have seen them matching also, not sure what the story is

I've got the bling and want to rid my truck of it! My hatch lock is Gold as well, figured I'd start with the emblems and move onto the lock after that .... checking local wrecking yards is a good idea for that lock. So total, I have the GOLD toyota symbol emblem in the grill, one centered on the rear hatch below the lock, and then the lock itself, and finally the painted symbol on my wheels center-cap.

My understanding is that chrome & gold plating is done by the local folks. I guess that the hatch lock would have to be removed and disassembled to be plated (as mine looks plated to very details); so might be the hesitation to have someone removing trim pieces of a brand new car or the additional cost that prevent the original owners from doing so.

don't think thats correct, the gold could have been done localy, many were. but Toyota did offer a OEM gold emblem package, about $250.

On my 100 series it came with gold....made me want to puke, so I took em off and rattle caned them black :D

last week I picked up a set of genuine black pearl embems for $60..........toyota is having a clearence sale on them, normal price was $200ish ;)

rear key hole on my 100 was silver/chrome. My "guess" is on the 80's with the gold key hole those were plated on the lot. those with silver/chrome had OEM gold crap, so no gold on the hole

what do you guys all mean by "plating on the lot". As in electroplated where they'd have to remove it all, put it in a bath etc; or just "painted" so to speak?

there are guys that come and do it with the emblems on the car, I have a feeling its just a plastic coating or something, but maybe not.

Hmmmm, I was thinking that it would be a lot of work removing the lock and cover to plate it, therefore the gold ones were Toyota and the ones with chrome locks and gold emblems were done on the lot? That was my guess. In any case, I dont like the gold on my black and have been too scared to pry them off and rattle can them or havent had the $$ to buy the black pearl and have them put on ...... I just need to quit bitchin' and do it !!

Nothing like talking through something :D

My wifes '97 (moonglow) has OEM Toyota Gold Package. The front and rear Toyota emblems are gold as well as the little cap on the radio antenna. The rear lock is chrome.
The owners manual mentions these three locations and suggests how to clean them etc...
Too much bling for me.

its easy but takes some time. they come off with just some fishing line with a knot in it to cut theu the tape/adhesive. Worst part is getting the old crap off the body, takes some time and lots of thumb work. But its WELL worth the time to do it.

Like I mentioned they "plate" them on the car on the lot.

Ok, I am willing to try it! My antenna base is gold as well .... forgot about that .... anyhow I will try anything to get this crap off of there! I tried a green scrubby from the kitchen, that didnt do shiznit!

the cap on my LX is gold also, in another thread someone stated that that was a LX/LC diffrence as thier LC was not, maybe that is a OEM plated/lot plated diffrence? like the lift gate key cover?

Our black 97 had a gold kit on it, including the gold lock on the rear hatch. The wife got me all chrome for my B-Day!! Too bad I didn't keep the old lock,I would've let you have it!

Don't know.....but I found the yellow card that came with the Owners Manual (card # 93-asm-187) and it had instructions for cleaning the 24 carat gold plating.

I haven't yet turned up the piece of paper that shows the three locations that I cited before but I distinctly remember it.

I'll keep looking.

Still a lot of bling to me.

montana.
unless you want to repaint the area leave the scrubby out of it.

trust me on this one. the two ways to remove adhesive are the tired thumb approach that pimp has put forth and the body shop approach wich is to use an eraser wheel in a die grinder and go to town on the remaining adhesive. eraser wheels are cork and will not mar the paint surface. I would recommend a fairly slow speed on the grinder at first though till you get used to them.

Just pry the emblems off and use "GOOGONE" to take care of the residue. I like the bling-less, gold makes me puke! Or the black pearl ones. IMO.
