you know, it's old, it's dry, it does no longer unwrap smoothly, it tears sideways from the side leaving tiny slivers that you have to try to pry with your fingernails... etc etc... enough to have you throw it away...

well, try putting it in the microwave for 15 seconds and then using it. It works for me, the glue warms up and it's again usable (for a while at least). YMMV.
 
Have you tried oiling your wallet to get it open and buy some new masking tape? :idea:
 
Yeah, I learned long ago to stop buying the cheap crappy tape. Get good 3M tape.
 
actually, I did buy more recently some of the 3M blue stuff instead of the white but it's the same sorry state of affair after a bit of time. That technology needs some work overall it seems.
 
Have to try that, prior to seeing this I've set it under and near a 60w bulb for about an hour.
 
If you have a diamond Vogel paint store their house brand called clean release is the last brand of tape you will buy once you try it.

You can buy it in 10 packs for around $50
