Got me an old heater; diesel or kerosene?

WMO don't work

In the absence of contradictory evidence, I decided to mix some WMO w/ the kero for the wick type kero heater. Approx 1-2 cups was mixed into 1 gallon of kerosene, then into the almost empty heater. That brought the fuel level up to a little over 1/2. It lit fine and appeared to burn well for 1/2hr or so, then I left the shop for lunch. Returning an hour later, the kero heater was out and cold to the touch. Gage still showed about 1/2 tank. Tried re-lighting but it just didn't seem to want to burn. Not good. Straight kero was added to the tank to get it to the full mark. That would light but burn weakly, then maybe die out after 15minutes.

The WMO came from my EFI diesel, so it should be pretty clean other than diesel contamination. It burns great in the woodstove.

My guess is that the oil is preventing the fuel from climbing up the wick. In retrospect the initial good burning was just the residual kerosene in the wick. After it began to pull the WMO into the wick is when the fire went out.

For now the tank will be overfilled to try forcing fuel up into the wick.

Bottom line: Don't mix WMO or WVO type substances with kerosene in a wick-type heater. It remains to be seen if diesel fuel will work. It is "oilier" than straight kero.
