So I'm walking up to my 80 this morning and notice that the drivers side rear sliding window is open. I never open those windows so I knew something was up. Sure enough, all of my tools are gone from the cargo area. Somehow the crackhead managed to get the window open without breaking it. I can't figure it out. I'm sure it was locked from the inside, and theres not a scratch on it.

So my questions are... anyone know of a way of better securing/locking these windows? And has anyone seen an after-market cargo area cover for 80's?

Thanks in advance for any info!

IM really sorry to hear that i have had all my chit stolen from my rig too while it was in my garage and i was home crooks these days are getting more ballsy every day it seems. I thought about your problem you might consider a cargo barrier for the rear and then maybe small steel screens for each side that way they could get it open butnot get in? that or i suppose you could just mount a lockable latch to the orignal since u rarly open them anyways

So you got robbed why you were home? ... this is crazy. Thanks for the ideas Mike!

I've had a few 80s and some of them 'feel' latched but are in fact not all the way locked. To lock some of them requires a LOT of force. Doesn't help much, but some of you guys may think they're all the way shut when they're not. If you don't use them regularly, you may not be familiar with the 'clack' that indicates the inside lock is engaged - goes for all 4 sliders on Cruisers.

Yep robbed while i was home. they took everything in my truck from my GPS to my Mag light. Not only that they found a spare key i had thrown in the truck since I was int he process of moving and my garage door opener. in other words they could have drivin off in my truck right then if they wanted to. I have to replace every lock in my LX and change the garage door opener to a different setting. Was a hell of a time let me tell ya.

sorry to hear you about your stuff i feel your pain.

That blow's Sorry to hear, I agree with Doug on the clack. But if someone wants what you have you could have a window to replace as well, Thats how it went with mine, But it was a Trooper, I had an alarm on it too, The DB's hit me while I was in School...:(
Good luck

Same thing happened to me in front of my office at 10:30 in the morning. I had my window cracked about 1/2 inch and the bastid got his fingers in there and pulled the window out and reached in and undid the lock/ Some day I will catch someone in the act and I'm gonna love every minute of it.

Sorry for the loss of your stuff. Insured I hope.

Get a rope!

Sorry to hear about this, sucks! Hope your insurance will help you replace things.

Have you considered a cargo-box? Many guys on this forum have built thier own. They usually include a drawer that pulls out once the tailgate is down. This could not only keep your tools etc out of site but it would take someone a significantly longer time to get at your stuff. I plan on building a box back there soon that will esentially have a false floor. I also suggest adding sensors to the sliding windows if you already have an alarm installed ...... its been mentioned before, you could keep a hungry dog back there too :D

Hmmm this is kind of interesting. I have always left one of my rear sliding windows slightly unlocked so if i lost my keys i could crawl in through there and get to my "hidden" set of keys that are in the car...Maybe i should rethink this one. Possibly hide the keys up under the car so i can actually lock the whole thing up.

Well, noto steal the thread or anything but anyone have any ideas for places in the undercarriage to hide a spare key?

I recall hearing about under the air cleaner box and possibly in the canister?

I tape a key in an inconspicuous place on the under carrage using black duct tape. Even with the truck on a lift it's hard to see.

You can buy all the bits for a cargo cover for your 80 from Toyota. Installing is invasive and the parts are expensive. >$500 if I remember correctly.

Have you considered just throwing a dark blanket over the stuff in back? With tinted windows nobody will be able to tell what's back there.

Also you could install a real dark aftermarket tint for the cargo area.

Wire a motion sensing alarm into your secondary battery and line the cargo area with electrified wire.

ZZZZZZZZZZZAP! The thief is the one convulsing on the floor!

MF34Inc, What part of LA you @?
Yeah with limo tint may help, its gonna be hard to tell to see from the outside what inside your cruiser, just my .02 cents.

can you retrofit the one piece rear windows? I have wondered this since the other problem with the sliders is leaking.

Hiding a key in the air cleaner is not too bright, so I'd pass. Unless you're going to break a window to get in your car so you can pull the hood latch.......

MF34,

Car thevies should be shot dead on the spot ! Sorry for your loss

Somehow I got lucky, factory solid glass windows, & with dark tint you can't tell wants hidden in the cargo area
