State Farm will cut further checks if more damage is discovered. They're the one consistently legit insurance company I've found.

The only way another shop will add anything to the original estimate is if they do 100% of what's on the original estimate. If you use the funds to buy a dissent rear bumper, you run the risk of finding things that aren't on the original estimate and you'll have to pony up the funds out of your pocket to have them fixed.

ok, who here is in dallas that has a good, trusted body shop? i've always used Sewell Lexus collision center b/c that's what we've always had before this 100.
Marshall Motors...off i35... Ask for Tom Marshall..

That's not my experience at all. You go to the insurance company and have them write up an estimate and cut you a check. You take your estimate to the body shop and tell them that you want them to put back on an aftermarket bumper for you instead of replacing and painting an oem bumper. They tear everything apart and find more damage. They write up a supplement for the insurance co, who may or may not send an adjuster out to verify. They do the work, install the bumper you had shipped to them (that's what I did), and then charge you for what they actually did. You end up paying the shop say roughly $800-1000 less than the estimate, which helps take some of the sting out of the $2k+ you just spent on a bumper.

This is pretty much exactly what happened with mine and there were zero issues with writing up a supplement when they found some additional damage.

Honestly, if you're thinking about putting on an aftermarket rear bumper, it won't ever get any cheaper than the OP's situation.

I wish him luck then. I just went through this with my front bumper and gave up on the secondary estimate after speaking with 6 shops in the area. None of them would touch it without doing all of the work as quoted on the original estimate. I decided to just give up on getting paid for everything that was broken.

Take it to them, that is your absolute best option. They can work on other brands, especially a 100.

Probably because you were using a shop that was on that particular insurance company's direct repair list, or basically contracted with the Ins Co. In that scenario, they absolutely have to repair the vehicle exactly the way the estimate says.

Flip side, find a shop that is not on their list, no contract there, and the shop will work however you want to.

The Ins Co owes to restore your vehicle to pre-accident condition. Not a penny more, not a penny less. Please bare in mind that the vehicle does not have to be at a body shop for the adjuster to come back out, photograph additional damage for his/her file, and pay the supplement straight to the vehicle owner. Collision claims are actually simple...it's either broken, damaged, or not, and there are no release forms to sign, waiving them of additional responsibilities.

If you're going aftermarket, I would pull this thing apart at home and document every broken clip etc, and call the adjuster to come back out and pay the difference, if any.

Just my .02...and good luck sir!!

after seeing my front bumper, the State Farm adjuster this morning actually said, "well, if you're going to put on an aftermarket bumper, now's the time to do it"

oh, and he took photos of my Dissent front to send to his buddies who have cruisers.

A teenager in Long Island hit my DS rear corner a few years back busting the outer taillight, ripping the bumper cover, and denting the body between the light and bumper. I took it to 2 body shops in my area for estimates before his insurer, State Farm, came to my office to do any estimate. He showed up in his van/office, looked over my truck for 15 minutes, and cut me a check for the damage. Stated that if the repairs exceed the amount, they'd work with the shop directly.

It ended up being right around $2K. What was surprising to me was that all 3 estimates were nearly identical. There minor differences in the labor rates and part prices, but it seemed they were all using the same software or something because the parts list and labor quantities were identical.

yeah, they ID parts and those have coded install times that the insurer will pay, and they also have pre-set allowances for labor

Wow, I had an absolutely horrible time with them when one of their insured hit my vehicle (I am not insured with them). At first they would not call me back after they said my car was totaled. Then they could not perform a reasonable valuation. Despite the fact that the State Farm member drove his Heep ON TOP of my hood, they denied covering an alignment and any reasons why the vehicle would not align. I am not done with them. I have more boring details about if anyone cares.

It might be better if you are insured by them, I hope so!

I could see an insurance company having claim guidelines, but I didn't mention State Farm to either of the other 2 shops. Is there an industry standard (racket)?

Sorry to hear - yah, my perspective is one of being insured by them - they've always been spectacular. Literally zero complaints.
