first off, if you ever have someone on the fence about buying a safe vehicle, look no further IMO. my wife got rear ended this weekend (pics to follow) and our daughter slept through the whole thing. didn't even feel it. the other girl's car didn't fare so well.

here's my question. has any one ever gotten in a rear end collision and incurred anything that the State Farm 'approved' collision center may not know to look for? i know these things aren't like typical vehicles, so i don't want something to go overlooked that comes back to bite us later. there is damage to the exhaust tip, so knowing that was impacted, is there anything "upstream" on the exhaust that i should make sure they check? what about the spare tire carrier and any cross-members? AHC? etc...This stuff is my biggest concern.

State Farm is sending us to Dallas Collision Center for the estimate and said we would receive a check on the spot and that any additional undiscovered issues would be taken care of directly with the shop that we ultimately chose to send it to.

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions. now on to the pics......

and ours. now, granted, it was riding on high on the AHC (thanks slee), but i think we came out ok.

I would take the truck to someone you trust first. Get an estimate and then go see what the insurance guys have to say. Don't show them your estimate if you do not need to. I would not accept a check unless you are happy with the number. Once you cash the check, all bets are off.

They have their bottom line in mind, not your requirements.

ok, who here is in dallas that has a good, trusted body shop? i've always used Sewell Lexus collision center b/c that's what we've always had before this 100.

I know you have a LC, but that is where I would start. If nothing else, they can check the underside to make sure nothing is bent.

Just go in and tell them that you've used their shop before and that you were well pleased with their service and that you trust them to evaluate the truck's damage. The worst they can say is no.

i get that they have their bottom line in mind. the way it was explained to my wife (so probably some translation issues here) is that the Dal Col Ctr would estimate and cut us a check, THEN if we took it to another body shop and they discovered something additional that needed repair, that State Farm would pay the body shop directly.

@Dwight S - they just told me on the phone to go to the State Farm shop first b/c they would just have to work with them anyway. ugh, what a PITA. i should have said, my intent is to just get a check out of State Farm because i'm in que for a bumper from Ben Calhoon so any money from this is going to a Dissent. i'm just trying to squeeze as much blood from this rock as i can.

I know in my state- if you go through State Farm then State Farm has to write the estimate. Just because they write the estimate first does not mean that's how it's going to stay. So go get the State Farm estimate and then take it and the vehicle to the shop you trust. The shop will then order parts off of the State Farm estimate. When the cruiser is taken apart, and if more damage is found, then they will send supplements to State Farm for the parts needed. It's really not a bad process- just how State Farm operates.

that's how this sounds. thanks @fjfj60

anyone dealt with a bumper replacement/repaint and the associated cost by chance?

Stewart's Paint and Body in Dallas is the best body shop in town. The only down side is that they're not a very speedy body shop. They mostly work on high end sports cars and exotics, but they had no trouble working on my 100-series when it got hit in a parking lot.

Instead of a straight repair/replace, I decided to go ahead and replace the rear bumper with a Slee. I had the bumper shipped to their shop and they were able to get it installed very cleanly.

That's exactly how it operates here in Texas. A couple of years ago, I was hit 3 times within about 9 months. Once rear ended at a stop light and twice had cars hit while parked in a parking lot. I would get an estimate from State Farm first (they knew me by name at their estimate facility in Allen), take it to my body shop of choice, who would then work on it and if a supplement was needed, they'd submit it to State Farm. FWIW, I always paid the body shop out of pocket and had State Farm send me the checks.

i'm going to send you a PM w/ my email since that is what i plan to do w/ the bumper - go w/ an aftermarket.

If it's just a repainted and replace Id guess youre going to be in the $1200-$1500 range after its all said and done. Make sure whatever route you go- unless it's a slee bumper- make sure they use OEM parts. If you get ahold of a good shop they will look out for you and not want to use any China parts on your cruiser.

By aftermarket I meant dissent/slee/ARB. Right now the plan is dissent. Was on the fence but wife just gave the ok on rear tire carrier which I thought would be a sticking point. So now just need to figure out shipping and powder on the Dissent.

Got pics of your LC taken directly from behind?

Sometimes parts can be moved around a bit in an accident that a casual look might not reveal. As an example, I think it unlikely that the collision center would check measurements to make sure a rear door didn't get tweaked. And an independent shop might not know the Toyota specified application of anti-rust agent (wax) in areas like the rear door if they did any work there. You would have to stay on top of that if you didn't go to a Toyota/Lexus dealer for repairs.

My experience in Florida is they (State Farm) will pay "discovered" items, but only if you stick with the type panels/parts on the vehicle before the accident. So if you wanted an aftermarket bumper, you would have to have the aftermarket bumper at the shop and pay out of your own pocket whatever the shop deemed was above and beyond book for an OEM bumper cover R&R.

Sent you a PM...
