I'm looking to put a pair of decent driving light on my front bumper. I commute to work around 2:00 AM regularly and I have had several near misses with deer already.

Right now, I'm leaning toward the Hella 500s...purely based on price.

However, I've heard very good things about the Lightforce's as well. I think that my limit would be Maxxed at ~$200.00

Basically I NEED to be able to see those deer well in advance, as well as get ready for the snow and fog around here.

I'm also considering throwing in a set of Hella H4s as well.

I would suggest upgrading your stock lights/harness as a good alternative to driving lights. I went with upgrades from Daniel Stern, and love the results.

Jake,

While your driving lights would be able to allow you to see those deer in advance they would not be suitable to let you see well in snow and fog (Light reflecting off of them, etc...)

If you want the best of both worlds (so to speak :hillbilly:) you might want to look for a pair of H4 fog/driving lights (Not too common as I've seen more driving/spot(pencil) than fog/driving).

Off the top of my head IPF's Super Rally 930's had such set-up (had driving/spot, too, IIRC), as well as Warn (re-badged Koito) offering a pair. There might be others, but that's all I know! :hillbilly:

Otherwise, you should just stick with either a pair of driving lights to avoid ramming into deer. ;)

Good luck!!

Mot :)

I have a set of Warn SDB 160 lights on my Range Rover, and they are fantastic. I will be using them on my FJ62 as well when I get around to finishing it and getting it back on the road again. Pricey, but the fog/spot lamp dual beam function is so nice. My local 4x4 shop wired them directly to the existing fog lamp and high beam circuits so they are very convenient to use. I was never happy with any aftermarket switch placement on any of my vehicles, it was always difficult to turn off the aux lights for oncoming traffic.

Here's the Warn SDB-160 HBE Dual Beam with fog/spot.

Warn Industries - Off Road Lights: SDB-160 HBE

They're a bit more than what you want to spend on them at $340-$400-ish/pair.

According to their site the fog's effective range is 125' (38m) and the spot's is 475' (145m).

They claim that they conform to the E-code (European Community standards). They say they use a 55w bulb. But their counterparts use higher wattage (80/110w-ish) so I might consider upgrading to them after the original bulbs burn out if you feel you need more juice.

I'm sure there are others that are similar, but this (and the IPF) are the onlye ones I know off the top of my head that might fit the bill.

They might not do as well as dedicated fog or spot, but instead, would be a good compromise, "IF" you need them both.

GOOD LUCK!!

I just put on KC lights and they look and work great. Very bright. Total cost was 120 bucks. Comes with relays and the switch. Pretty easy to install.

KC Highlights 135 watts you can land the space shuttle with the lights. Or you can go with the Hella 500 like you were talking about I have them on my truck and they work great.

i just put hella h4 housings and hella 55/100 bulbs and I built a harness for them and they are awsome. the low beams are as bright as the stock high beams are. but i also still had the stock Koito bulbs too. When i build my front bumper i am going to throw some KC lights on there. I have had a set of the 100w KC on my 40. I have had them for about 10 years and they are still as bright as they were when they came out of the box.

Does anyone know if those deer whistles actually work? Those may help keep the deer away from your truck. Not sure if they are real or a gimmick...

I would say gimmick... Sure wouldn't want to rely on them.

I wonder if MythBusters ever tackled it?

Why don't you try them and let us know how well they do (not?) work!

They simply work by having air go through them, right? Maybe we can take one to the zoo (If they have deer, elk, moose, etc...) and blow in it and see if it even makes them flinch! :hillbilly:

I have used the 500's on a few cars and like them.

I ran the IPF H-4 replacement lights with upgraded harness as well as IPF 630 fog lights in yellow. I too work nights and have never been let down with this setup... Hope that helps.

I just stole the roundeyes out of my 40 and put them in my 60, they are pretty damn bright, especially when switched to high beams. Best part is they are a direct bolt in for your stock lights, and you can change the bulbs. Check the mud homepage there is a little write up on em.
