I'm going to replace my clutch and rear main seal this weekend. I have been reading posts and tech tips on the subject. I like the idea of using the PVC pipe and end cap to drive in the new rear main seal (posted by bsevans) I think I will go the route of opening up the tranny cover and using a cherry picker to lower the tranny/transfer case out to the ground. While I have the tranny/xfer case out I was thinking I would clean up the grime and give it a look over. BTW, the output shaft on the xfer case has been leaking, can I replace that seal like I would an engine rear main or would I have to open the whole case? Oh well the work this weekend will depend on how I feel (getting over the flu!) If I am healthy I will tackle the job. I'll post how it goes. Wish me luck
Oh How much should I expect to pay for a flywheel resurfacing and does anyone in the Portland Oregon area know a good place to take it to?

Flywheel resurfacing in my area runs 75$ now....:frown:

you'll be better off removing the pan and dropping the rear main cap to replace the rear main (less chance of a fxxx-up) besides the pan is most-likely leaking anyway.............

if your are talking about the rear xfer output then yea it's really easy to replace.. just like a pinion or wheel seal. You just slide the drum off and then unbolt the backing plate from the transfer.. its 4 bolts. you don't need to take any of the springs off to get to the bolts so you can leave all of the shoes and stuff in place. If you plan on replacing your pilot bearing i would read up on that too - bsmith and i used rent-a-tool from autozone.. we got the pilot bearing attachment and the slide hammer.. put one arm of the attachment in and a couple of whacks with the hammer and it popped right out. also make sure to save those little clips that hold your clutch fork to your throwout hub

Yes ,grant5127, I do plan on dropping the oil pan to access the seal and yes it is leaking already. and anfFJ, I bought a pilot bearing puller from Harbor Freight to replace the bearing. Now that I think of it, I might as well replace the Parking brake shoes while I am there anyway. I think this will snowball into a much larger job once I open Pandora's box.
Thanks for the advice fellas. I rely on this forum a lot for doing jobs. I think it is a well spent $20.00 every year.

Its a good idea to apply a thin coat of sealant between the block & main cap while you have it off as well......seepage has been known in that area as direct oil pressure is present.......
