So I'm going in tomorrow morning to Discount tire to order new tires and wheels, I think we've decided on the BFG MT's, but were also looking at the AT's. This is going to be my daily driver, so the AT's might be the way to go, but if the gas mileage isn't as bad as the ratings say, we may spend the extra $40 or so each for the MT's (give me a suggestion)

The wheels I'm looking at are going to be the Pro Comp Series 52 16-8 (6 X 5.5) for reasons the pictures and video will illustrate, plus I seem to have more options with 16" wheels

Video, asking some questions

Rotars, still some good metal there

Not much room, this needs to be fixed

Funny, I just went through buying a set of new wheels and tires a while back. I thought that I found more options for tires with the 15 inch wheel. :meh:

I could be wrong, but the main reason for going to 16 would be that touching of the steering arms and wheel, unless ya'll thick that the backspacing can solve the problem..??

Should be fixed with appropriate backspacing. A 1/4" spacer might work too, but depending on rims it could require longer wheel studs.

Looks like if you backspace another 1/4 inch or so, you will clear your arm and boot. I have a spacer, but will replace that with a backspaced wheel when I have a little cash...

okay, so I'm assuming that Discount will be able to look at the pictures I tool and measure the current BS and know what to do? Am I adding "more" backspacing or reducing backspacing by a 1/4"?

  1. Go with the AT KO. If you are daily driving it, they don't suck in the rain (and do great in snow and ice--but I doubt that's a huge concern for you).
  2. The AT KO last a long time. I put 100,000 miles on a set on the little truck. Probably would have lasted one more winter too. Because of that, they are the ONLY tire I would consider for a daily driver.
  3. The AT KO is available in more efficient sizes. Namely: skinny. 33x9.50 or 33x10.50 still give you 33 inch tires, but the rolling resistance is a lot less than some super wide tire. A LOT less. Those sizes pretty much mean 15" wheels though (not a problem, if you ask me).
  4. You can also get the MTR KM2's in 255/85R16 though, which is roughly 33x10.00
  5. The AT KO isn't a terribly awful tire off road, but it's definitely not as good at the MT varieties... That said, my tires have never been my limiting factor when I couldn't go somewhere I wanted.

Increasing diameter doesn't necessarily mean it'll clear your TRE. I have seen wheels that have enough of a bump of some sort on the inside of the wheel that still hit. I think you have a backspacing problem, more than a diameter problem.

16" wheels tend to have better load ratings (rather, 16" tires usually are rated a full grade more than 15" tires), but I doubt you can haul a ton of stuff in your 40 anyway--it's just not that big.

Search, but IIRC the factory wheel had 3.5" backspacing.

I've been running the BFG AT for years on both my FJ40, FJ62, and the wife's FZJ80. Great all around tire for a Daily Driver, and preform well for off road when needed.

As for the Wheel - maybe a set of FJ62 Chrome wheels? :p

Also,
I would look at 4 Wheel Parts for wheels, and maybe even tires. I've had good luck with the procomp wheels from them.

Or 60 series wheels painted black/dark gray (pic of Bad Mojo's truck)...

Whatever you do, don't put the lettering outside. Cruisers look silly with anything but plain black tires. And for goodness' sakes don't ever make the tires shiny. /rant

I don't mind ordering off line, I just don't know what the correct BS should be, the video shows the BS I measured. What I need to know is am I adding more backspace or reducing it? In otherwards, is the 4.25" I measured suppose to get larger or smaller?

I have a set of 35" BFG MT KM2's on my 40 w/ 15" wheels. It is not my daily driver and I've been just tooling around town in it since I've got it running. The tires / wheel combo works great for me, not super loud. With that being said, if it was my daily driver, I probably would have gone w/ the AT just for more on road capabilities (rain) and longer life of the tire. I do love the look of the KM2 though!
