I was at a 4wd show in Perth last week and I wandered into the Gearmaster display
They have been making portal axles for Nissan Patrols for a couple of years now.
So I asked them about Landcruisers. According to them they will have a protoype ready by mid 2007 and in production by october 2007 for 80 and 70 series .
They will cost about $15k AUD for a the complete hub to hub units, front and rear. You just bolt your old brakes on
Gives a 102mm lift.

Hell yes, finally some info on these things...god awfully expensive though. Wonder if that price will come down after a year or so.

About 11,500 US. Very nice but pricey.

I thought so too at 1st,but there are not many options around for this type of mod.
The mog portals are very heavy and everything else is rare and still requires a lot of fabbing to make it work.

As the salesman told me,this is not some half baked thing you just bolt to your old axle. There is a lot of machining and work involved to keep the weight down and the strength up;)

I read somewhere that it will also be legal to run them onroad here if you really need them and of course we all do dont we:D

School me on these, what do they do, and why would someone want them?

If you look close you will see the centre of the wheel or hub is lower than the centre of the axle.
Its a way of lifting a vehicle without a suspension lift, bigger wheels or body lift.

I forgot to ask how the wheels are driven but portals are usually driven by gears at the end or can be chain driven.
On some Unimogs you can swap the gears on the axles and hubs to change ratios, big gear up top, small gear below or vice versa

direct bolt in no messing around, and i would also want a good highway gears.
are the diffs extra?

however for me there is no doubt that portal are the ultimate lift and would be very nice on my 74.

I wonder what is available here in North America other than unimog/volvo portals?

:)

This thread definately belongs over in technical.

Here is thread to a build up with Volvo portal axles. Later in the thread there are pictures of the vehicle in action.

More lift, without any changes to suspension (about 4 inches with this stock axle set up that Rosco has shown us), as well as more axle clearance (this is a biggy) for all kinds of terrain.

If I had a spare 10k layin' around I would be very excited.

Curious- are they like the maxi-drive boxes where they utilize four gears? (or you could use three gars, but at added height... unless the diff is flipped, which then means you'd need new axles with the elocker...

The bracing on the knuckle's needed- the axles deform without the drop boxes.

Portals are nifty, but they're at the opposite end of the spectrum of driveability.

Those volvos look like the go but here in OZ we would have no chance of finding any.

I have a friend that was looking for mog diffs and couldn't find any that were any good and in the end he got a complete 404 mog for $16000 that he now cannot bring himself to destroy for the diffs.

How easy are the volvos to get in the US and how much are you looking at.

I think if you wanted those to be cost effective here you would have to ship a few sets.

Cheers Phil.

This is one of two topics that I get a kick out of. The other is Diesels. Everyone gets their panties wet over these items but in the end nothing usually goes anywhere.

In TiredIron's case he asked what his truck is worth and all I can remember is people telling him not to sell it. Did anyone give him a price?

I know I'll never see a Diesel or portals on my truck, so what's the sense of getting worked up over it.
