Hi guys.
recently I have become the proud owner of a HJ47 (aussie truck) I hadn't driven it on the road b4 today, as I have been updateing drivetrain bearings/seals and brakes etc.
anyway finally got to go for a blast down our little road today, all was going well till i tried to go from 3rd gear to 4th. the gear stick was stuck fast and it took many clutch depresses and jiggleing to get it bak to neutral.
This condition only seems to happen after loading in third gear, eg I can move the gear stick in and out of 3rd all day with the motor not running and it'll neva catch, also when going down hill the gear stick rarely catches coming out of third.

The clutch is not the problem as all other gears are selected easily and it also slides effortlessly into third gear, its just when coming out of third it gets stuck. The gearbox has the correct amount of gear oil in it. everthing else seems fine (no crunching, grinding, wirring.)

Im not that savvy with gearboxes wich is why I'm hopeing some of you cruiser experts can enlighten me to what would cause this. I'm thinking it might be a problem with a selector shaft thingys that the gear stick joins to.

Thanks in advance

Also i'd like to know wether the tub and chassis from a FJ45 is the same (direct swap) as the HJ47's (note these are aussie cruiser versions) tub and chassis.

If you find out, be sure to post it because I have the same problem. I think it might be a bent shift fork but I am not sure.

Not sure if the selector works the same as the 5 speeds but i had this problem with 4th in my old fj75 messing around and jiggling it etc to try get it out when it would get stuck i ended up takeing the shifter and top plate with the gear selectors runners etc off and putting another top on my dad had lying around in the shed off another box ,replaced the little plastic cup cover thing on the end on the gearsticks ball that go's in the box and never had another problem

Try pulling UP on the stick when you go into third, and try pulling UP on the stick when you go to shift OUT of third, and see if that makes a difference.

Best

i had the shift forks wear basically completely out were they mate on the coller in a ford , from some one resting there hand on the shifter going down the highway .

i definitely welded plate onto the forks and grinded it smooth .

i would pull the cover and check out the rails , etc .

I just had the same problem on the SM420 in my cruiser and fixed it today. The shift forks were worn out and the 3/4 fork would catch to the point the tranny wouldn't come out of third. Put a new cover/fork assembly on (as new as a used one can be) and it shifts very nicely now...

See if Mark's suggestion works and if it does it's a $20 part to fix.
