My gearbox is getting a little noisy so she's in for a rebuild. Looks like a few gears need replacing, new is silly $$$ & ex Japan so I need to track down some parts. Scoping around 2nd hand first but a backup plan might be this new box for sale locally: Brand New Toyota R151F 4WD Gearbox

So I'm wondering if I can swap bellhousings & bolt up the HZJ78/79 R151 in place of my tired LJ71 R150. Fairly sure the transfercases were the same but not sure on input/output shafts & bellhousing attachments. Gearstick looks to be in the same place. I can probably head over & measure it up if I have to.

Cheers

Hate to sound like a salesman, but have you tried the Terrain Tamer guys over there?

Both trannys are nearly the same .. so yes .. you can swap them, be advice ( google it ) there are sightly gear ratio differences between 2 boxes ..

Thanks guys! Terrain Tamer don't list anything for the LJ71 but they do list a bunch of gearboxes & parts for other R150F equipped Toyotas so will look into that. The wider gear spread of the R151 would be nice though.

Clint - Their online listings don't reflect all of the JDM rigs, but if you call (or have a stockist who will track it down) they can ususlly get what you need....

Thanks guys. Terrain tamer do indeed have parts for my R150 but they are $$$. Going to have a look at a friend's parts stash today, if he doesn't have the gears I need buying that brand new R151 is looking like a good option.

The gearbox repair shop also thought that the 1HZ R151 should bolt on, same transfer case of course & they said that apart from a strange van version, virtually all R150/R151 are the same at the front end.

Terrain Tamer may yet get my cash.

Couldn't find any decent parts in my mate's R15* parts stash. He did have a munted ex HZJ78 gearbox there though that I checked out & it seems that contrary to popular opinion - it won't be a bolt up job into an LJ71 as the HZJ - R151 input shaft is longer than on the LJ-R150 box

Cheers
