80w90 works fine. Look for Shell Spirax 80w-90. It's mil-spec and $5/qt

X3...

BTW you didnt mention if its for trans of t-case/diffs.

For manual trans - Some say that a GL-5 has EP additives that are not the best for syncros. I think these same people say GL-4 is the ticket in this application.
For diffs/t-case - 80W90... anything with 'GL-5' on the bottle meets the spec.

I used GL-5 in trans and it shifted awesome once warmed up.

I like the idea of using one type of gear oil in all gear boxes...it makes life easier.

PS. Walmart's supertech.. made by a major oil manufacturer, don't let the label scare you.

Cheap to change, and change interval is more important than "B"rand in my book ;)

And stay away from sythetics if you have a fairly high miles worn tranny. I didn't have good luck with sythetic because one of my synchros was worn out. After changing to synthetic it stopped shifting into third without grinding. Synthetic also tends to get past old seals easier so you may get more leaks as well.

I went back to regular 80/90w and the tranny started shifting OK again.

Doesnt matter.

I run 90/140 in my diffs and transfer case and 85/90 for easier shifts when chilly in the transmission. I bought a 5 gallon drum and a pump as I tent to play in the water and change it on a pretty regular basis. Just cheapest they had is what I bought, it is all pretty much the same if spec'd GL-5.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I live in a smallish town, and my cruiser is at my parents house which is an even smaller town, so all I could find at the local parts house was 80w-90 Valvoline dino oil. I put it in both diffs, the t-case, and the transmission.
