I am trying to order some of the 5/8" Gates green line hose to replace the PHH and PHH neighbor, per the recommendations here:
and here:

I have done the PHH bypass already, but with inferior hose and with generic hose clamps, and it came off recently. What I am wondering is, have I found the right hose to order? Should I be ordering heater hose or coolant hose? What's the difference?

I think I found what I need here, Salesforce B2B Commerce - https://www.fleetpride.com/gs/%40uri#q=gates%205/8 at the top result, but while it says it is Gates green stripe, it is black... what is with all the variations and which one do I need?

Thanks in advance!

Many years ago I was able to buy Gates Green stripe and constant tension hose clamps at the local NAPA in Mesa.

Now that I think about it, it has been many years and I should probably do it again.

"Heater hose" or "coolant hose?" Is there a difference?

Edit -> I checked Napa's website and don't find either, only hydraulic hoses.

I always called it heater hose. My guess is that "heater hose" is just "coolant hose" that is sized for the run to the heater.

Here it is is at O'reillys Gates Green Stripe (upon further review, this page says it is not available)

There is a thread that says Napa sells it under their own brand name as FleetFlex gold-- so maybe this. (and upon more further review this is Canada Napa-- so I am not really being very helpful)

This might be it

Great find! That's got to be it, right? Nearly identical and slightly better specs than those cited for the Gates hose here: PHH Kits - http://www.phhkit.com/phh-kits.html

I would just buy the above but it's a little steep and I want to do the PHH neighbor too.

Plus I tend to trust NAPA in general. Curious if anyone has any opinions about that. I feel like they do a little more QA on their brands than some of the stuff at O'Reilly or Autozone.

Thanks!

Napa gold stripe is very thick and it’s what I have used on multiple heater hoses.

I'm not convinced that removing original PHH hard pipe in favour of a hose is a good idea. Was the plastic inlet on the heater control valve designed to take that extra weight and vibration? I know many choose this option but I have a feeling Mr. T designed it with a pipe for a reason.

I have the same gut sense, but then again the hard pipe is bolted to the engine and the heater valve is bolted to the firewall, and they move independently, so maybe the bypass hose is actually a good idea to reduce forces on the valve? That being said, I used a new oem hard pipe on mine, since I figure the Toyota engineers designed it this way for a reason.

How did you fit the new hard pipe? I would love to know if it is possible.

I had the upper intake plenum removed, and it was pretty straightforward. There is a lower bolt that is trickier to get to, but you have more room to work with the plenum off.

We are doing a bunch of things to my father's (90 he has not been driving much) prior to sending it out to my daughter who lives in Denver and is in the outdoor sports industry. I have to take the TB off, the upper plenum looks ambitious but doable. There are a bunch of vacuum lines under there that need replacement anyway.

Good time to replace the fuel filter if the plenum is coming off.

I agree i replaced with a new pipe and hose from Mr. T also factory cotor pin on the hose for next time!

I did that a year ago using the relief cut method! Still not 100% on approach to rear heater.

My final issue is at 233k miles the birfs are original. There are no signs of grease in the diff or oil in the birfs. We top up the grease every 3k miles, but I would hate to send it out there and find they leak ….
