Hi guys, been on this site for awhile but have not made my rookie intro yet, I just wanted to get the 40 running first. Anyway, I will make the proper intro. as soon as I get this beast driving. This '77 has been sitting in my cousin's garage for 9 years and before that sitting in the side of the house of the PO for another maybe another two or three years. I just rebuilt the carb and got it running through a one gal. gas tank from the bottom of the truck. There is two outlet from the gas tank under the pass. seat, one at the bottom and the other at the mid-line of the tank. First, I want to find out which is the supply and which is the return line for the carb? Second, I blew into the tube that is coming out of the mid-line and it's nice and clear. But when I try the blow through the tube coming from the bottom, it's clogged. Can I run a wire or somthing flexable to clear this tube?
Is there a screen a the end of this tube inside the tank? I am almost there so any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.

Supply is on the bottom driver side corner of the fuel tank, on 09/73-12/78 fuel tanks.

Return is on the driver side, mid-line of the tank.

Yes you can try and snake something through that supply tube and see what is going on.

Does it have fuel in it right now? Has it been sitting empty or with fuel in it for nine-plus years?

I poured about 1/2 gal of gas into it thinking that it'll come through the bottom tube(me attempt to flush it). Nothing came out so that was when I blew through the tubes. I believe the tank sat the previous 9 years with little to no gas in the tank. So if I understand you right Poser, I can run something through the bottom tube to try to clear it. What if I can't clear it by snaking it, what are my option? If I take the tank out, am I able to get to that area to clear it?
Thanks

:meh:

Pull the sending unit and take a gander  tank could be full of crap!

[Pull the sending unit and take a gander]

Where is the sending unit? Do I have to pull the seat to get to it?

Pull that sucker and clean it out! On the cheap you can use h20 and lye with a length of chain inside. Let the lye go to work eating up the rust and stuff, shake it around and let the chain loosen the rusted bits. dump it and rinse several times. rinse several times before adding the lye (drain cleaner) too!

The best way to do it would be to take it to the radiator shop and have them cook and clean it out then epoxy coat the inside, they can also weld any holes found shut. New tanks can be had from toyota if this one is a total lost cause (unlikely) DONT buy a poly tank, they leak and don't fit well.

Thanks guys, this weekend I'll remove the tank and flush it to see what falls out and if it looks bad I'll take it to the radiator shop and have them clean it out.

Good idea.

Whats an idea on the going price for a rad shop to re line the inside of a tank, just a ball park

Well guys, i took the tank out, removed the sending unit and looked inside:a little bit of surface rust, not too bad. The question now is what is at the end of the supply tube in the tank, I still can't blow through it. Is there a one way check valve in it? I ran a braided wire cable through it and "roto rooter" it, it went in about 16" in and stopped, hooked up a drill to it and spun it, removed the cable and blew through it, still clogged. Have any of you guys ever tried blowing through the supply line? Should I be able to blow through it ? Or is there a check valve in it to regulate one way flow?
Thanks.

i,d just put the air hose to it.it should blow through just fine.

Tried that already, that was the first thing i did, figuring i'll blow the clog right out. NOT A CHANCE! Too simple!
Anybody else?

Well, finally cleared the supply tube. The PO must have had the tank sealed and somehow the sealant got into the end of the tube and clogged it. I roto rootered it with a length of flexible steel braided cable and turned it with a drill until it finally cleared through. Thanks guys.
