Hey all...I've had my FJ62 for about 6 months now...250K miles but runs strong, doesn't consume oil and mpg averages 12 in mostly city driving. Loving it but concerned with gas smell especially when the weather gets hotter. The smell clears up when driving.

Ok so I've been searching Mud to figure this out...symptoms:
-Gas smell builds up when parked. Coming from rear interior 1/4 panel
-Whooosh when gas cap opened ....though not huge
- No whoosh when tank line disconnected from charcoal canister
-Line from separator to canister clear.
What I've done/inspected:
-Interior vapor separator lines look good
-Exterior vapor lines from tank to vapor manifold look ok ( I did order replacement lines but seems like a PITA to install)
- Rubber grommet on filler neck from tank to body worn out/failing . Slight smell of gas under 1/4 panel exterior
- Found used OEM canister in great shape that tests good according to FSM ( I can hear check valve moving when 10psi applied to tank check valve)

I'm out of time this weekend to install replacement canister
Could a bad VCV valve be the culprit ? I can test it tomorrow at work.
Is there anything else I'm missing ?
I'm in SoCal so I need to keep the emissions system intact and in good working order.

Thanks !

Anders

I'd remove the interior panel and the splash shield underneath and check the hoses, could be a bad hose or the connector metal junction piece has rusted

Yes I did remove splash shield and interior panel and checked hoses . The metal junction manifold is in good shape. The rubber grommet sealing the tank side filler pipe to the body is rotted out though. Just wondering if is as simple as replacing that grommet to stop the gas vapor build up in the 1/4 panel. The truck has spent its life in California so it has no rust.

Thanks for the reply

Yeah - one or more of the decrepit vapor lines connecting to the vapor separator behind that quarter panel is eeking gas fumes.
The tank is supposed to have some vapor pressure in it after driving or on a warm day - to prevent the gas fumes from evaporating into the air & making smog.
But gas fumes in the cab is bad.

Cruiser Matt has all of the vent hoses, top side ant the rear quarter panel and bottom side at the tank. Also the filler hose, grommet and fuel cap. I did all of that and the smells are gone!

Thanks everyone. I put on a new OEM cap and I've ordered the filler kit from @cruisermatt . I had ordered the exterior hose kit last month. For the interior hoses, do the corresponding hoses match with the exterior hoses? Any advice on the procedures to install the new hoses would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

The rubber grommet sealing the tank side filler pipe to the body is rotted out though.

When this happened to me, the RR quarter panel filled with wash and rain water - literally gallons were sloshing around in there. I replaced this filler neck gasket and then removed the tiny rubber plug in the bottom of the rear quarter panel so that water would not accumulate in the future, should the gasket fail again. This was on an '87 FJ60.
