Hello,

I am thinking about haveing the frame I just got for my 60 galvanized. I read that it should be sandblasted to remove paint as the hot dip process will not stick to paint. Will a sandblaster be able to get inside all the boxed frame of a 60? Or should i just use a paint and forget the galvanizing all togehter? If you have galvanized your frame let me know how it went ? If I just end up sandblasting asd repainting what paints are best?

Thanks for the help!

I was thinking of going this route but I live in the west coast..
if you going to be driving this rig in the winter on the east coast then yeah I would go that route....
I dont think sandblasting a frame on the inside would be possible...

There are a few threads on here about hot-dip galvanizing frames. I don't think you need to sandblast as long as the galvanizer is fine with having paint, etc. on the frame. The galvanizing is hot enough to burn off anything that's on the frame.

yeah i have been reading up about it and have read some theads on here about hot dip. Can anyone who has done it tell me how it went and how there frame turned out, held up ect? All the sites i read say to have it sandblated to remove paint ect ... so the hot dip will burn off any paint ... i am worried about the boxed in part of the frame getting good coverage.

I've never done a frame, but typically have architectural metalwork done. The galvanizer usually is set up to first acid tank whatever you ship them to clean it up before galvanizing. There is a whole process for prep.

I'm near Harrisburg, PA and the closest galvanizer is in Baltimore, MD. The EPA regulations have really cut down on the number of places doing it out there. If you cannot find anyone local to talk to, check out architectural metalwork places - either structural steel or people doing railings and catwalks and such. They'll have the details on what you need to do and could possibly include it in one of their shipments to wherever they have it done.

The one issue is any fasteners to the frame. Either you're going to have to redrill and tap everything or put in sacrificial fasteners. Sacrificial fasteners isn't always the way to go because you can chip off the galvanizing around them when you remove them. But redrill and tap is time consuming.

i just spoke to one of the galvanizations places closest to me. They said it would cost 400 -500 bucks to dip once. They said that if the acid bath doesnt take off all the paint then it will burn off in the galvanization tank however it wouldn't be galvanized where the paint burned off. He said they would have to redip it at a cost of 30% more to get those spots galvanized.

I was planning on dipping mine but then thought of the aggravation of re-tapping all the holes again.
I went with a sand blast and powder coat job instead.

Compared to 800-1000 for a good sandblast 300 is nothing... Plus you don't have to paint (I was thinking of Line-X ing mine after the galvanizing.

Has anyone galvanized tubs or body parts? I would love to hear the results as I was planning on acid dipping my body anyway...

SilverSixty, I am in Central MA and will be having my FJ62 frame galvanized in the future. I found a place near Boston that quoted me about $450 to hot dip the frame and then galvanize it. They asked if it had any original paint on it, but said the frame would not have to be sandblasted.

Having to chase the bolt holes after is a cheap price to pay for what I feel is the most protective coating you could put on your frame. The selling point for me was that ALL of the frame, including inside the box sections and every nook and cranny of the frame will be coated and protected.

MSGGrunt do you know anyone who has had there frame galvanized? The guy i spoke to here in ct said i should get it sandblasted 1st. What place did you talk to near boston? How long into the future are you looking to get your frame done? Maybe we can get a deal if we do both at the same time?? SOme places have a set price for under 600 lbs and some have set prices for light truck frames.

I had mine hot dipped and galvanized without doing anything else. I just unbolted everything and loaded it up to get dipped. I paid $500 I believe back in 2004. Everything appears to be fine with it still. I haven't finished my project, but there doesn't appear to be any problems with the galvanizing.

Where did you get your frame galvanized? I live near Destin, FL and am working on a 78 FJ40 and a 76 FJ45 Pickup.

i sent a message to Waorani ... lets see what he says.

I had my 40 frame galvanized several years ago at Atlantic Southeast Galvanizing in Claxton, GA (I think they also have other locations). Cost was $250 - their minimum at the time with costs usually based on weight of what's being galvanized.

Main attraction for me was no prep required. They initially dipped in the molten zinc bath to burn off oil/grease, undercoating, and other crud (I was surprised that they weren't worried about contaminating their zinc). Then it when through the various chemical baths before going back into the zinc. The biggest hassle was two round trips to drop off/pick up.
