Just got started on building my 66 40. Going to keep 1F, and go sm465 with NP203 and dont know if I should go with a NP205 or 60 series split case behind the 203? It is going to get FZJ80 elocked rear which pumpkin is more centered than 40/60 stuff also being moved back 8" . I think either way I will have a horizontal offset in the rear d-line. Any help is appreciated? Will post pictures of my progress when I get there:beer:. Thanks

I run a FZJ80 rear end with a FJ60 split case and the angle isn't too bad, it will be probably no worse than running a centered transfer case.

That axle is really wide for a 40. I narrowed mine by 5-3/4" to match the width of an fj60 front end, which is 3" wider than an fj40 front end. I only modified the passenger side and mine is now offset just a bit to the passenger side of the stock (now Orion) output.

The e-locker yoke is in _exactly_ the same place as the normal diff. Not sure why you thought different.

If you somehow use it full-width, I'd go with a centered transfer case. If you're moving it back 8", use a 203/205 combo.

What front end are you planning to use?

80 axle is perfect width for a trail 40! I first had it hooked to an Orion/SM420 2F setup and it drove awesome on or off road. Now it's in a 1" off center Atlas/auto tranny setup and it still has tolerable angles. The 64" WMS to WMS is a great width if your crawling! I'm running 3.5" offset wheels.

Thanks guys for the info, for my setup I am also tossing around a NV4500 to 4.7 23 spline mini case....but always think more width is a good thing. I ran an old 4Runner on full widths, very stable. Any other input?

I am also very interested in your setup Uncle Ben. Looks like those leaves are acting as your lower control arms/springs?

I am planning on running a 60/62 front housing with FJ80 rear elocked third member, 30 spline longfields, IFS hubs, 4x4 Labs hi steer. Leaf sprung front and rear.

It would seem that you are going to be offset whether you go with a 60 series case (offset to the drivers side) or a centered output (offset to the passenger side), so you may as well go to the better world of centered output.

Looks like a 1/4 elliptical with a triangulated 4 link, BBCS shocks, and an anti sway bar? Nice.

I have been thinking about doing this on the rear of my FJ40 as well. I have a 60 series rear axle right now, how much more centered is it?

60 series is the same offset as a 40 series

sorry, I should be more clear with my it. How much more centered is an 80 series rear axle compared to a 60 series axle?

80 series is a 4" offset.

I dont know the offset on the 40/60 axles....for some reason 7" stands out in my lil head.

I'm impressed! :) You know your goodies!

The 80 rear is 4" offset. 60 & 40 rear offset is 6"

80 housings (& carriers) are a lot thicker tubing plus they have the factory trusses. I'm sure someone has done it but I personally have never heard anyone bending a rear 80 housing. If 83" WMS/WMS is too wide use the Runner or cheap aftermarket 17 in wheels as they are 5" negative offset which will get you very close to FJ-60 width track.

Good choice but you really need to widen the 60 housing 3+ inches on the short side to match up with the rear. Bobby will make you a custom short side inner axle. Elockers are great unless you twist an axle! Also, it's getting harder to find actuator housings for them as they really hate rocks! An ARB is much mo betta and cheaper in the long run! ;)

You can see why matching widths are a good idea in this pic....

Its a curse.

Ive been keeping my eye on the BBCS's for a while, they will replace my 5125's.

I got mine cheap because it was bent. Story was the guy backed up parallel to a retaining wall. It wasn't a wheeling incident. We cut the bent section out when we narrowed it and made sure it was straight before we welded it back up. Bobby made a custom shaft for that side and I use one of his drive plates. The long side is stock and I have a spare.

As an e-locker fan I've got to agree. If I was running bigger tires I'd go with an ARB instead. If you're putting an e-locker in a full-floater and running big tires it would be ideal to retrofit a removable cover. PITA maybe but it's easier to do it in the garage than on the trail.

I got all my parts for super cheap, so it made a ton of sense for me. I got a built, C&T SOA fj62 axle with 30 spline longfields and an e-locker for $1100 and my fzj80 full-floater with an e-locker was only $400.

My son bent my 80 housing. Its why I ended up with a spare 80 third to put in the front of my 55.

He turned in front of a Kia trying to beat the light. She hit him square in the tire at 45 mph. bent the housing and the axle and blew out the MTR. Fortunately, Discount Tire convinced me I needed road hazard coverage and they replaced it free.

Doing a mini/LC hybrid centered would be a way to go, but no discs or full floaters. My full floaters were very handy when I snapped an axle and just drove out with no worries.

Info on bent 80 housing is good to know....wait....no it's not.........I can't hear you.....:rolleyes: :bang::lol:

So Ben - Do you think my axle widths will be matching for the most part with this setup? Ideally I would like to keep shafts stock length for spares and such, I see what your saying though. I was going to weld the two inner studs to get it as far towards the short side as possible.

Also - Going with 37" Cooper STT's on 17" beadlocks so not too concerned with twisting up the axle or breaking shafts...knock on wood:beer:
